What do those run $ wise? I'm seeing all kinds of different pricing.

x5650 should be around $150. I read through the entire linked thread, and the only person in there posting significant gains is the OP. Mild gains make sense, he's suggesting something life altering. Grain of salt recommended. wink.gif

Try this guide for OCing your current chip. Its systematic and doesn't tell you to change 5 things at once. Maybe you'll get to 4 GHz then.

For what its worth, I'm not upgrading until X99. I'm not having problems running anything yet, and everything out now feels like a side grade.

You said you upgraded to 700-series in the first post. Is that also SLI? If not, your money might be better spent on a second card to run those 3 monitors in your sig.

Just running 1080p on my tv. I like to be lazy and recline.

I got the 780 for cheap so that's why I got it. Just thinking that my old system is out of date for a 700 series.

PCIe 2.0 is enough to keep up with SLIed 780s if you want. If you get the 920 up to 4.0 or higher, you won't have much of a bottleneck either.

I built this system with a 920 back when they were hot stuff. I recently got one of the X5650s to replace it. I got mine for $110 on a "Make Offer", I offered 100 and he countered to 110. I was nervous about getting one that wouldn't overclock, but this one hit 4.6 with almost no work at all. The ebayer I got mine from was esisoinc, they shipped the same day I ordered it.

Firehawk is right about the gains. I've tested it myself. As far as the core performance goes the X5650 is slightly faster, maybe 5%. In apps that are heavily threaded you will see a significant gain. I'm glad I got it, if for nothing else than something to new to tinker with. It is more powerful and MOAR COREZ is never a bad thing. I think I'll upgrade at Haswell E or maybe Skylake. I don't know, no rush though.

Temps are very very good compared to my 920. This CPU idles at 27, just a couple degrees over ambient. Full load is 55C. The 920 was hotter all the way around.

4.6GHz is extremely unusual on even a D0 Bloomfield. 4-4.2GHz are typical 24/7 air/CLC clocks.

I've had eight or nine Bloomfields, all but one a D0, and not a single one was stable at more than 4.3GHz on air, while the worst D0 couldn't crack 3.9GHz, and the C0 topped out at 3.8.

Some of the later Gulftowns do clock quite a bit higher, but there is still an enormous spectrum. You may get one that does 4.6GHz, or one that has difficulty with 4.1GHz.

You probably have a lower leakage, higher voltage, sample. You may well need 1.35v+ (load) for 4GHz+.

However, there are a lot of other factors to consider when OCing bloomfield.

Some quirks/recommendations:

Odd CPU (core) multipliers tend to be much easier to stabilize than even ones.

QPI multipler will probably need to be at it's lowest possible setting (but not "slow mode") for high BCLK operation without excessive voltage, this is usually 18x.

If you are running triple channel, uncore clock must be at least the double the MT/s value of the memory you are running. Multipliers of 2x DDR or 2x +1 generally work best without needing significant overvolting. Some setups also throw a fit if uncore is higher than QPI multiplier.

You generally should not need to touch any voltages except for vcore and QPI/VTT, unless you are running well past 200 BCLK.

Leave clock skews and drive strengths alone. Not normally beneficial except for 220MHz+ BCLK.

Don't go overboard with LLC. You want some degree of vdroop.

I mainly just game so thats my main focus.

Im gonna have to do some research and see if I can get the 2000mhz ram to work. Tired of it just collecting dust. Im running bios G42 I believe since I believe its the only one thatll run 400 series and up.

Theres a buttload of these xeons on ebay. Ive found a good amount of xeons at the metal recycler but there all old 771 socket. Ill end up buying a 5660 and then start finding by the handful. LOL
