[engadget] LG launching its first 19:10 4K monitor with 31-inch ultra-widescreen panel

LG's monitor division has been zigging lately while it's competitors zagged, skipping regular widescreen in favor 21:9 ultra-widescreen models. It's now made another interesting choice for its first 4K monitor, the 31-inch 31MU95. It'll feature a so-called DCI or Real 4K (4,096 x 2,160) IPS panel with a 19:10 ratio -- similar to a screen it demo'd at CES last year.

Not sure if this is vapor ware or not ..

*EDIT sorry this is 4months old, didnt see it posted though

I assume this will be quite nice. It has the 16:10 height but not quite as wide as 21:9 so perhaps not as squat looking. 21:9 is nice but you need a massive screen size to get the height of a 16:9 i.e 34" to get the height of 27"

but that 10 height may well be very nice indeed matched with a slightly wider aspect. I suppose this is the new successor to 16:10? The only downside is 1080p wont scale the same as a lower resolution (i know i did say that) 16:9 4k panel

bezel is a bit big, but still.. That's what Half life lost coast looks like on it biggrin.gif

I do like that aspect ratio, you can see the extra width over a 16:10. Shame its not curved but you cant have everything

To clear up any confusion (thanks a bunch LG marketing team):
Code:
16:10 = 1.600:1 aspect ratio
16:9 = 1.777:1 ~ 11.1% wider than 16:10
19:10 = 1.896:1 ~ 18.5% wider than 16:10 ~06.6% wider than 16:9
21:9 ~ 2.370:1 ~ 48.1% wider than 16:10 ~33.3% wider than 16:9 ~25% wider than 19:10

So for anyone thinking this is the rebirth of 16:10, it's the complete opposite as it's wider than 16:9, not taller. Thank the lovely marketers for switching the divisor willy-nilly.

For reference, pretty much any movie not shot in CinemaScope (2:39:1) is generally shot in 1.85:1, hence the need for a cinema standard that is wider than the TV standard. This display is targeted specifically at film studios that need to work in full 4K and has no real use for the consumer at present.

Good luck with that at these resolutions until DP 1.3 and HDMI 2 are out.
