PSU fan and GPU fan fighting over the same air?

Thread Starter
Need some help on this one.
Going to perform a small upgrade for my parents pc.
The current videocard is a dead HD 6670. Will be replaced by HD 7750.

The issue I'm asking you about, is if the GPU fan and PSU fan, will be fighting over the same air?
I have provided a screenshot, and added the new height with red line of the new videocard. What do you think?

it'll be fine. overall oem pcs have terrible airflow. if there's anyway to add exhaust fans just do that.

A few cable ties to tame those wires and get them out of the air path would be a good idea as well.

Thanks.

There is room for one 92mm as exhaust at the rear (at the very bottom)
And then theres a 120mm fan mount on the sidepanel (right at where the black tunnel for the cpu fan)

Maybe by thinking about it, I could install a cooler-master tx3 evo cpu cooler instead. Just for more silence and better temps.. But should the side 120mm fan, act as intake or exhaust then?

I might be wrong but I would put the side fan as intake.
you can always try both ways and see which works the best.

Need to bump this.

The new videocard, are actually going to take up two slots. So my added screenshot in #1, might be too little. Will it still be good, where the PSU and GPU cooler, not fighting over the same air? Its this one here

Unless the PSU is taking its air from a hole in the rear/back... it looks a bit like that might be the case.

If the PSU is not taking air from just above the GPU, then you'll be ok... not fantastic, but ok.

Otherwise can you flip the PSU around? Is there an air intake at the top?
OR you'll have to start building ducts to guide the air... or grab the dremel and cut a hole in the top/rear smile.gif

need some more pix, from different angles to see the possibilitties... this is not your typical 5'n'dime pc case smile.gif

As for side, when using the "funnel" and the stock heatsink on the CPU, then the side should be intake ..... an extra 120mm fan will help, but a filter on the sidepanel might not be a bad idea smile.gif

I don't think you need to be worried, a 7750 is low power. The PSU can act as a exhaust for your GPU

Since your CPU has a shroud, all of your case airflow will be going to cool your PSU and GPU. And yes, they will be pulling from the same airstream. It may not be a big draw, but it will be the point of lowest pressure for sure.

Looking at the case again, I would suggest at these three things (in order):

1. Use some zip-ties to get all of those PSU and SATA cables down below the GPU. Clear the air path to the intake zone you're creating.

2. Add a filtered vent, or better yet, an intake fan on the side of the case directly above that intake zone. Even a slim fan would be better than no fan there.

3. Add a highly-directional intake fan to the front of the case with a straight path to the PSU/GPU intakes. A Silverstone Air Penetrator would be perfect.

4. If you cannot add air via #2 or #3 above, then increase the overall case pressure via more or more powerful intake fans. Replace any stock intake fan with a modern fan with more air flow. If the case does not have an intake fan at all, see if you can add one. (See Bill Owen's YouTube channel or MNPCTECH.COM for how-to guides.) Don't forget the filter.

But whatever else you do, get that bunch of wires out of the way of the air flow!

Also, case-modding is fun, and you don't have to sit next to the case when you are done with it!

Theres no front intake holes for fan(s) on this cheap pc-case my parents has.

Someone suggested flipping the psu, so the psu fan faces upward. But there is no air intake at the top of the case either.
Then there were the thing about the cpu shroud. Guess I forgot to mention this. There will be installed an cooler-master tx3 evo. So the current shroud, will be removed for good.

So I guess my only options, are actually none? redface.gif
