Recover deleted stuff from Pen Drive. Please help!

Hey guys what's up?

The story is like this: Today I plugged in my USB pen drive into my PC and when I went to browse my files, I saw that something weird was happening: The names of the files and folders had like very weird characters (most of them were squares). My initial thoughts were that my pen drive was infected with a virus. When that happened, I was under Windows XP on my second partition (yes, I need Windows XP for one program a friend made for me, years ago, for manipulating and monitoring my expenses which is only compatible with Windows XP). Then I switched partitions, and in Windows 7 a window popped up, to diagnostic and fix any problem with my pen drive. I made that sort of test, and afterwards when I browse my pen drive, ka-boom, a lot of important files were not there !! Like they disappeared for good. I need them back guys.

Do you guys know a way to recover those files? Thanks a lot for your help smile.gif.

You could try a file recovery tool like Recuva (made by the same people that develop CCleaner). When a file gets 'deleted', it doesn't actually get destroyed. The space that the file occupied is simply marked as available for new files to be written there. Assuming you haven't done anything on the pen drive after you saw that your files were gone, you'll probably be able to recover them!

Good luck!

If data recovery software won't work then your only option is to take the drive to a data recovery specialist. You will have to search to find companies that offer these services in your area, they will cost a lot of money though. My dad had data recovered from an SD card last year and it cost him £80.

Also, backup important files! wink.gif

Hmmm. You could try iCare Data Recovery. The thing is, if the data was deleted then these programs may work but if it became corrupted then there isn't really much you can do, recovery programs will probably just make it worse.

In my experience, Recuva has been by far the best free file recovery program available.  Please try Recuva again, following the steps below:

  1. Start Recuva and cancel the wizard if it comes up.
  2. Click [Options] and go to the Actions tab.
  3. Tick all the options in the Actions tab and click [OK].
  4. Select your SD card reader in the dropdown next to the [Scan] button, and click [Scan].
  5. When the scan is finished, see if Recuva has detected your files this time.
  6. When recovering files, be sure to recover them to a different disk drive so that unrecovered data isn't overwritten by the new copies of your files.
