ATI 7xxx series card with 3 monitors (not eyefinity)

My buddy has dual 7xxx cards (I think 7870 or something along that nature) and they are crossfired. Awesome for gaming on his monitors. But he wants to start gaming on his TV with his PC. I thought I read somewhere that if you hook 3+ monitors to an AMD card, you need to use a display port. He has 2 DVI to the two monitors, and on his top card he has a HDMI and a DP connection free.

Can he have 2 DVI and 1 HDMI output, or does he need 2 DVI and 1 DP output?

I remember this to be the case with 5XXX series and possibly 6XXX but I cant say the same for 7XXX.

In any case, free bump so someone more knowledgeable than I can confirm

It doesn't make much difference does it? I'd say use DP to be safe, or borrow HDMI cable to test it out.

It matters because he doesn't want to buy a $30 adaptor :-p but that's what he's trying. Just bought an hdmi cord to test it out.

As long as it's not being used for Eyefinity, he can connect it any way he likes. I've used all 4 ports (DVI, HDMI, 2x Mini-DP) to run 4 monitors on my 7950 before. I could even use the video ports on my motherboard for more monitors, but again, these would all just be extended desktops and only one monitor would be used for gaming.

However, if he wants Eyefinity, then one monitor must run off at least one DP.
