My gf is just beginning PC games though so she doesn't need a lot of power just yet. CPU gets 5200 in 3dmark 11 physics

oh yah, 3GHz is not enough even with a 7870. my i7 SB has to be oc'ed to 4.5 even with just a 7950 to play nice in BF3 (never tried anything in between stock and 4.5GHz).

Are you planning on upgrading to an i5 at any point in the future? If not I would say get an FX-6300 for the CPU, Battlefield in particular will love it. For the GPU are you willing to buy used cards? If so grab a non-reference 280x, it will destroy anything at 1080p. If you want to stick to new parts, a 760 or 270x are what you should be looking at.
