H60 idling at 80 (with slight improvements) Explained Inside...

Thread Starter
Hello all,

I've had my H60 water cooling setup for a little over 3 years now and today while doing my routine maintenance with MalwareBytes and Spybot, my computer got a BSOD (which I do not get much often at all, maybe once a year).
In any case I restarted the computer and got a Post message saying that the CPU temperatures are too hot. Went into the BIOS to see and it was at 97C!
The pump is connected to Fan 1 (running at around 4500 constant) and the fan is at around 1800.
While this was going on, for unknown reasons, my Windows would not boot up (it would load the user welcome page and hang there) so I was utterly confused.
In any case I gave it some time and now Windows loads but naturally the temperatures are still overwhelmingly hot.

I have re-applied Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste, made sure all the screws were nice and tight (no wobbles) and same result, within the BIOS it shows as 97C. Currently, when I booted the computer to make this post, CPUID HWM began showing low 80s and now it is sitting at high 50's as the idle temperature. The instant I start Prime, it will immediately jump to 96-97, forcing me to stop it due to fear or damaging something.

I have air-canned everything, made sure that the pump and the fans are running (checking via FanSpeed) and cannot come up with another idea. I know that when I first installed the H60 a while back, it was reporting in the higher 30s to lower 40s.

I do have my CPU overclocked. It is an i5 2500k 3.3 stock (I think) overclocked to 4.2, but it has always been this way.
The CPU Vcore is usually around 0.98

Any additional thoughts on what I could do to improve?
What do you guys believe the initial issue was? The thermal paste? Perhaps it is curing now, therefore I am seeing somewhat of an improvement?

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

sounds like maybe the pump died

That is what I was thinking too, but if that was the case, would fan reader still show 4k rpm for the pump?

Try running the unit outside the case and shake the block and radiator while it runs. To me it sounds like there's an air pocket trapped somewhere, preventing the fluid from circulating.

is the fan reader reading the PUMP speed, or the speed of the fan attached to the rad?
Thread Starter
Both. The fan is showing 1800 rpm whereas the pump shows 4500, which I believe is correct.
Something to add, to my touch, one of the pipes is warm, whereas the other is room temperature. The radiator is totally cool to the touch.
Perhaps it is an air bubble? Should I be installing the h60 in a particular position so that the pipes are getting used more properly?

How is your radiator oriented? According to this post I found, Corsair recommends mounting it such that the tubes are coming out of the bottom of the radiator.

Regardless of what the pump rpm is reading at something is up with the cooler. Idle temps seem high as well. Do you have an air cooler you can put on it to test operation?
