New Build Passes Prime95 but Fails IBT

I am currently doing some stress testing on my recently-assembled, bone-stock system. I typically do this to weed out any hardware faults or compatibility problems right off the bat.

My current system:

Rampage IV Black with current BIOS
4930K
GTX 780 Ti SLI
EVGA 1300 G2
GSkill Ripjaws X 4x4 1600 @ XMP
H100i

I can pass any variation of Prime all day long without issue. When I fired up IBT on maximum setting I hit a BSOD within the first few passes. I upped the vcore so loaded it's sitting steady at 1.168v. This allowed me to pass 10 runs of IBT on maximum but when I queued up 30 it hit another BSOD somewhere along the way.

Thinking it might be memory related. I have XMP set and have verified that the correct settings are reflected in the BIOS. I decided to up the VCCSA to 1.000v (Auto had it set at 0.934v) and so far it seems I'm OK.

Is it common to have to boost the VCCSA a little even at stock settings?

You should not have to increase any voltages when running stock speeds, unless you are running high speed RAM such as 2133MHz and above. When running Prime95, are you using small FFT or blend test? Also, the XMP profile should not be causing a problem at all.

I suspect IBT is either giving a false reading, or the Motherboard and/or RAM is getting too warm due to IBT's strain.

Questions, are you running the latest BIOS?
Have you tried IBT with only 1 stick of RAM?

I haven't tried pulling any memory yet but that's the next thing on the list.

Temps should be OK as the house is pretty cool right now. I'm not actually getting the error itself in IBT but strictly BSOD right now. Since my OP it BSOD'ed again.

I do have another set of memory here. I might try that to see what happens.

I understand the house is cool, but I had similar issues and it ended up being the Motherboard overheating in the VRM section. A small 40mm fan at low speed fixed this issue. So, you need to rule out the RAM and the Motherboard and RAM operational temperatures.

I just tried a 2x4GB kit of Corsair Vengeance 1866. I set everything else to default except for the XMP profile (which only sets speed, DRAM voltage, and timings)

30 runs of IBT Maximum no problem.

I'm now testing the Gskills in pairs to see what the outcome is. If it is the memory at fault, I should see one set fail.

Well, it was either going to be the RAM or the MB in my opinion. smile.gif
Good to see we've found the potential fault.

I've read that running high DRAM bus frequencies, super-tight timings, or high capacities (64GB) could require some tweaking beyond what XMP defines. That can't possibly be the case for 4 sticks of very mundane 1600 9-9-9-24 2T can it?

No, 1600MHz does not require additional configuration or voltage adjustmments. thumb.gif

Thanks for the help so far Bradley.!

The first pair of Gskill passed 30 IBT Maximum no problem. The second set is in there now still chugging away.

If it does indeed pass - motherboard problem?

The second pair of GSkill failed IBT Maximum. Time to get an RMA going....
