Vcore vs Offset vs Turbo voltage

As far as overclocking, what are the main differences between these options and why use one over another to overclock with?

Currently I have my offset fixed at 0.005v and using my turbo voltage to overclock. I ask this question because regardless of what I set the turbo voltage to cpuz reports the same voltage. So basically it doesn't change anything.

I have a stable overclock of 4.7 and vcore never goes over 1.38v, but if it could be stable at a lower voltage I'd lower it. It feels like changing anything other than the vcore has no effect.

Vcore = Voltage passing through the CPU
Offset = Vcore + Offset = Actual Voltage
As for Turbo, not sure. This looks like some sort of overhead feature. Consult your motherboard manual. It's not a common feature.

Thanks for the reply. I think turbo is like the offset, but only under load.

So are you saying you can't see the added offset voltage in cpuz? If the vcore is 1.3v at load according to cpuz and my offset is 0.01v, then my actual voltage is 1.31v even though cpuz says 1.3v?

Actual voltage versus reported voltage can have some variance. The only accurate way to confirm is with a digital multimeter, and some motherboard mfgs. have even included "voltage checkpoints" for this very reason.

However, in my experience most of today's cpu voltage monitoring utilities are pretty accurate at reporting the same reading as the BIOS is reporting.

I've only ran on a comparisons on two boards; an older MSI X58 Big Bang and my current Gigabyte Z77 UD5H (both of which have voltage monitoring points).

CPUz / HWMonitor and OCCT were all within a margin of error on the CPU voltage.

That makes sense, but is cpuz reporting the vcore + offset? I understand there is some variance, but without a multimeter you would look at the vcore in cpuz and add whatever the offset is to the reported vcore? Or is it already added at this point? I ask because changing the offset has never change the vcore reading in cpuz no matter how much or little I set it.

no, in CPUz you will see the current voltage, even with offset.
what offset does it chip away at the peak voltage when the chip turbos up and it allows you to retain your extremely low idle voltage.
so, if normally your chip turbos at 1.35v, but you know its stable at 1.28v under load, you would use -.07v offset to bring the voltage down to 1.28v.

its all based on your chips VID i believe...which varies drastically between chips, same with the offset adjustments.
but the VID is what your CPU thinks it wants power wise.

to answer your Q, CPUz will show you what the voltage is....so if offset puts you at 1.28, then you see 1.28

CPU-Z reports the "current" voltage passing through your CPU at the present time. The Voltage will most likely change when the CPU is under high load.

Let us look at an example.
Let's say your CPU runs as a stock voltage (VID) of 1.3v.
When the CPU is idle, the voltage will be 0.8v and the load voltage will be 1.3v!
That's simple enough right?

Now let's look at Offset!
Let's say the VID is 1.3 again, and let's use an Offset of +0.010v.
When the CPU is idle, the voltage will be 0.8v again, and the load voltage will be 1.3v + 0.010v = 1.31v.

Does that clear things up for you?

Yes everything you said is clear and I understand. However, I am wondering why changing the offset doesn't change the load voltage. Using your example, in prime95 the reported voltage is 1.3v even with the offset at +0.010v and even at +0.020v. Even with the offset at -0.005v prime95 shows 1.3v.I just don't understand why it doesn't change. Sorry, I am just trying to fully understand.

The only addition I'll make to the offset voltage conversation.

On multiple Asus and Gigabyte boards I've worked with, if you use a negative offset it may also reduce the idle vcore - which in some cases can introduce instability at the desktop or doing light load things like web browsing, office or even viewing a YouTube video.

On another note, I've had pretty good success using offset voltage control with mild overclocks on Asus and Gigabyte Z68 and Z77 boards. I only use static if I'm going for some aggressive OC results.
