Vcore vs Offset vs Turbo voltage - Page 2

That -0.005 V offset you are using in your experiment might be too little. The sensors are separate from whatever part is setting the voltage. The sensors don't have very fine resolution, can't show 0.001 V steps for example. You are only getting shown three digits after the comma on those numbers because the hardware is using binary numbers, and there's problems translating that into decimal for humans.

You should btw. check out the program HWINFO and start it in its sensor mode. It will show you the VID value that the CPU wants to have and will show you the VCore that the motherboard records it's seeing. If you set LLC (Load Line Calibration) so that there is never a voltage drop, Offset should work like this:

VCore = VID + Offset

That Turbo voltage you have on ASRock is the same as Offset, but only getting added when the CPU is in Turbo Boost. That's how I understood that setting. I currently don't have ASRock so can't test anymore. It seems like you should use that setting, not the Offset setting. It will mean you will be able to add voltage for your overclock, but the CPU will use the normal low voltage when idle without Offset. That Turbo voltage stuff is something that my Gigabyte board and other brands simply can't do so that's why a lot of people won't understand what's going on if you talk about this.

Offset voltage applies to the whole voltage-clock curve. That includes all the clock states from idle to overclocked.

Turbo voltage applies only to the highest multiplier on the voltage-clock curve. This only includes the overclocked state.

This is an example of a voltage-clock curve. The grey dotted line is default voltage-clocks or VID. The two red lines represent positive and negative offset. While turbo voltage is not pictured, adding it causes the voltage to follow the offset line until it reaches the turbo state and then the line will jump higher.


Turbo voltage is the way to go if you do not have issues with stability at lower clocks. And quite often it is possible to use a negative offset in conjunction with additional turbo voltage to account for overcompensation of Intels VID at lower clocks.

I appreciate all the information. Everything you guys have said makes perfect sense. What doesn't make sense is changing the offset value 0.01v or more is not changing the vcore value.

I have lowered my offset from 0.021v (thought I needed that much, but it was the PPL voltage causing stability issues) to 0.005v and the vcore voltage is 1.38v under load with both offset settings. So offset at 0.021v and 0.005v both use 1.38v at load. Why is this? I'm afraid to go any lower.

Try using a different version of CPU-Z (I assume that is what you are using) or another program like Open Hardware Monitor, but avoid any that report VID like CoreTemp or RealTemp. Also, if you have other windows based overclocking software, such as Intel Extreme Tuning utility, or one of the motherboard provided varieties, it may be setting a new overclock when you log into windows.

Have you tried increasing the Vcore load line calibration? Maybe there is too much vdroop on the vcore.

It's on level 2. I'll try other programs to see if they show different. Also I don't have any Windows based overclocking software unless it was installed without me knowing.

JT - because you are adjusting two different voltage settings to obtain your desired vcore it is really complicating matters.

When I'm searching for my best cpu overclock, I start with static cpu vcore and adjust the load line calibration settings as needed. Once I achieve my max stable overclock at voltages I'm comfortable with I reset everything back to stock and then attempt to achieve the same vcore using offset vcore control.

For me that is usually the quickest and most reliable method of locking down a good cpu overclock using offset vcore control.

The other trick I've found on the 2600K / 2700K processor is to lower the CPU PLL value from the default or auto value of 1.80v down to 1.65v and work back up from there.

For whatever reason, the SB processors respond well to lowering the CPU PLL in some situations.
