Which router would you choose? - Page 2

I've got the ASUS RT-AC66U

I've got it a year or so and ONLY now I'm starting to study/understand some features tongue.gif --> I just wanted it because it was cool and ASUS (read my avatar's name wink.gif)

I didn't even had wireless AC laptops at home hehe... But I wanted a router because the router my ISP gave (Telenet) sucked... --> you could not set many options in that router of them (like port forwarding etc)

I must say it's a nice router with LAN PC's connected, but I'm having issues with the WiFi part...

I've got a new laptop with WiFI N card. Never got high speeds (50-60Mbps was max) at 7m from the router with only one wooden door between it...

So I swapped the WiFi card with an Intel 7260 AC (or something) and now I'm on the 5GHz band of my router but still meh... (Max 100Mbps)

If I open the door and 1m from router I get full 150Mbps down and 10Mbps up speed...

If I use the laptop outside 2 meters farder away than the 7m (but with another door in between) I don't even get a signal...)

And that confuses me. So I have an AC router with AC card in the laptop. I can see in the routers software (Data Traffic Monitor) that I'm on the 5GHz band, but when I'm 9 meters away from the router with 2 walls in between it gives no signal at all???

IIRC I had a friends laptop here to do a format C, it had a WiFi N card and when I did a speedtest it still got connection outside 30m away from the routrer... (same place, same 2 walls in between)

So I don't know if it's the routers problem or something else atm, maybe other members can give extra info, but that's something you may want to consider in buying the AC-66U

I also like the router to be able to support firmware like DD-WRT, makes the router so much nicer. Also remember you get what you pay for with a router. The switch Bridgypoo mentioned is good but get the 8 port one instead, they always go on sale and it's actually one port less with the devices you can connect. Router has 4 ports, the switch has 4 so that would be a total of 6 available LAN ports compared to to the 12 you get with an 8 port switch.

Thanks for your post. The thing is though, which one should I choose? I've never bought a router before, never had to. So I have no idea what to choose.

Depends on your budget. I went through 3 Asus routers and gave up and bought the netgear nighthawk myself lol.

The Nighthawk is the latest AC version atm AC1900 (The AC speed is the same as the slower AC1750 of my router, but the N speeds are doubled 600 vs 300 or something)

There is already the Asus RT-AC87U (AC2300) with 4 antennas comming so that will probably be even better/faster

So yeah... you know... this is hardware land... Buy a new one at the store, but it's already old before you even have left the store... And if you wait just a little bit longer... (yup there is proly gonna be a newer model, etc...)

So don't stare blind at what to buy... buy what you're budget alows... And since it's gonna be your first router can I assume you don't gonna use it for all his possibilities???

Anyway here are some tests of routers.

3m vs 10m away from router
on the 2.4GHz and 5GHz band

It's in Dutch but you'll understand by looking at it

Haven't been keeping up much on new routers lately. Out of the ones you posted I liked the ASUS RT-AC66U best. I also forgot in my previous post I usually go for ones with external antennas.

I have had nothing but issues with ASUS routers. From overheating to DOA to just stopped working altogether.

This isnt going to be easy huh? wink.gif

I really have no idea on what to choose. I dont know if I should choose a cheap router and if the wifi signal sucks, then just add a wifi extender.

I dont think that I need the AC. I just googled for routers and read a few reviews, and that model were one of them. I'm currently looking at the Asus RT-N56U since it only costs 90$ here.

I'll make it even "easier" for you tongue.gif

Don't go for WiFi extenders as theat will cut speed in HALF. (Because it's not a router)

A router can do data from PC 1 to PC2 simultaniously, while data from PC 2 is comming to PC 1.

The extender can ONLY do data from PC 1 to PC 2 (so PC 2 has to wait for sending data to PC 1)

That way speed is reduced to 50%

You could go for 2 WiFi routers and set them up as an "extender" --> both are routers and they will figure the routing table out (are you must set it manually)
