780ti Question

Thread Starter
Hello overclocker's,

I've spent some time before registering on this forum and reading about this specific card 780ti.
In my case, own MSI 780ti 3GB Gaming.

This card was purchased about 2-3 months ago, and i am starting to think that i made mistake?
What my concern is that, i see that new 780ti with 6GB of VRAM is coming out (or is out already)? (why such a big jump - double VRAM? - they noticed 3GB was a mistake or?)
I noticed that only EVGA will be offering "step up" from 3GB to 6GB of VRAM? Why not others?

This is VERY expensive peace of hardware, and i like to upgrade my hardware (GPU) every 2-3 years.
Did i make mistake purchasing this card? I am afraid, that even next year, or year after, this won't be enough with new games, and it will be hard to sell, where ppl for sure will be getting 6GB card before 3GB etc?

Currently, i have only one monitor, resolution is : 1920x1200.
At this moment, i am able to run everything - max settings.

I have i7 3930K (overclocked) , RAID0 for my OS\Games, 16GB ram, etc.

I apologize for many questions, but, should i sell this card now, while its still worth good money (i believe) or keep it, and enjoy it for another 1-2 years?

Thank you for reading\responses\your time.

You will be fine with your card. The 6GB model is for people gaming at 4k/multi-screen setups with SLI. A single 3GB 780ti will never use its full VRAM at 1920x1200, and even at higher resolutions the card itself would bottleneck before the VRAM would.

PC buyers remorse should be classified as a recognised " poorly" lol, you will be fine with the 3gb@ your resolution in the majority of cases imo, offering up extra vram models is not new practice, has been going on for some time and will continue.

Yep, i understand that new stuff is coming out every couple of months.
I was just wondering why such a big jump, but, Yorkston answered on that question.

the EVGA step up system is just one of their (unique) selling points. There are some restrictions though- you need to have registered the card within 14 days of purchase (or buy their extended warranty) and the card be less than 90 days old to qualify for their step up program.

That's all really beside the point. No one made a mistake releasing 3GB cards, that was the nvidia specification, EVGA have just taken it upon themselves to make a card with more VRAM. This will only really benefit people running UHD monitors (4K) or high end surround setups (e.g. 3x 1440p), at your resolution it won't make one iota of difference.

I currently run 3x reference 780TI's at 1440p and haven't run out of VRAM yet with genuinely all the settings maxed (including AA, AF etc).

There is always something new on the horizon so don't fret about it.

For 1920x1200 3gb are enough worry, maybe at 2560x1440 in a year or so I would see that wouldnt be enough at ultra if you use all graphics folters to the max and ultra graphics(also if games become more demanding vram.wise)

I mean...with 2560x1440 not 1920x1200 and under maximum graphics and this ONLY IF games become more vram demanding

There are only a few instances where 3gb will not be enough.

Users with multiple screen setups and/or older games with unoptimized texture mods like Skyrim.

Even with 4k screens, unless you're using a bunch of AA which does nothing for picture quality, you're still fine.

I play Hitman, Tomb Raider, Metro LL, Far Cry 3 etc at 1440p with all highest settings with little to no AA and don't even break 2 gb.

Vram is being used as more of a marketing tool lately. This 6gb Nvidia card is an attempt to start moving cards again before the next generation is out.
