FX 8320 upgrade over 6100

Thread Starter
G'day,

I'm currently using an FX6100, been using it for over a year now. I want to upgrade to an 8320, well, I'm thinking of upgrading to an 8320 (as well as upgrading my RAM). I just want to know how much improvement would I see in multi-threaded performance over the 6100 and will my board VRM's handle it (I'm not planning on overclocking)? I do quite a bit of bioinformatics and I use virtual machines extensively as well. My PC at work is a 4770K with 32GB RAM so please don't tell me to move to an Intel platform because I'm not interested.

Cheers.

P.S. The 8320 is about $50 cheaper than the 8350 hence why I am tending towards the 8320.

your motherboard has 4+1 phase design and will not run the 8320 properly so you would need a new motherboard before upgrading too the 8320

it might be OK and it might not,,,i know the 6100 was a dog to overclock,,but at stock settings your really not gonna gain much of anything,,except 2 cores

How unfortunate. If I have to buy a new board, I may as well build a new system. Would be good to see performance results using BWA or CLC.

The 8xx0 series FX chips are not recommended on that motherboard. If you insist on trying it, get an 8320 and absolutely do not try to overclock it, period. Your best bet is really a 6300, which is the best 95W FX that AMD offers, but it's only 10-15 percent faster than your 6100. If you think you need the octocore and you're not interested in anything Intel, your best bet is to get a board that properly supports the 83x0 chips and sell the board you have to recoup some of the costs.

I was really hoping for steamroller FX series chips... What's the performance gain for the 8320 against the 6100?

I'm only against Intel because I have an i7 3632QM in my laptop and and i7 4770K in my university pc. From my experience I have been finding that AMD's multi-threaded performance is trumping the Intel chips when it comes to DNA mapping and aligning hence why my home desktop is an AMD chip. If only it was GPU accelerated redface.gif

There won't be any FX chips on the Steamroller core. There might be on Excavator, but they won't be on the AM3+ platform. AMD hasn't announced any long-term plans for the FX line, although they have suggested that there will be more FX chips at some point.

An 8320 will be between 20 and 40 percent faster than a 6100 on workloads that use all available cores. It has a 10-15 percent advantage in single-core performance due to the improvements in the Piledriver architecture over Bulldozer, and it has 33 percent more cores available to use. Real-world performance depends on how efficient the software is at using the additional resources. It's a worthwhile upgrade, which is what I think you are really asking. It's a very worthwhile upgrade if you put it on a motherboard that will allow you to overclock.

That's a decent upgrade. What board would you recommend? I'm not really into crossfire so would a 970 chip be fine still and would my PSU be fine too?
