But this has TWO full GK110, not one like the K6000.

My mistake. I thought the k6000 and k40 were dual GPU :/

Yeah,
Probably you are the only one missing some things DownshiftArtist. The Z lacks half the vram accessible to the single 12gb K6000 but the latter also has ecc ram, but solidworks doesn't care for it. Not the 12gb, not the 6 even and ofc not for the ecc.

The titan Z has nothing to offer over a titan black for solidworks or any other CAD viewport. In fact it won't be notably better than a vanilla gtx780 3gb.

You would be better of getting a W5000 for any dedicated Solidworks workstation, it sips power, it costs ad much as a 780 and 2gb are ok even for multiple displays.

Again, my mistake. The specs looked similar enough that, combined with my false idea that the tesla and k6k were dual core, I believed it to be the same. I'll try to be more thorough in my research before making an ass of myself in the future....key word being "try".

Back to the topic at hand, I'm not really surprised at the card existence so much as I am the price. And now, knowing how different it is from a 6k, it seems even more ridiculous. It's an awesome card...but for what? Bragging rights? I mean the first Titan was in the same category but at least the price was more tolerable for a "look at me" card. I think even at 1999, it would get a much better reception. I still can't see why someone wouldn't just get 2 kingpins or wait for the 6gb 780 ti to drop and buy a pair. I guess they figure there's a market for really really expensive.....gaming card? Folding card? Workstation....err...no wrong moniker.

You're right, I am missing something; the justification for the price. Oh and for the record, we were looking at a few different quadros but the k6k and k40 were never seriously considered. A K2000 is more of what we were looking for.

And then there's the R9 295x2. It has a quite exotic cooling system, probably performs as good as if not better than the Titan Z, and costs half the price. Lets not even get into compute performance, because outside of CUDA-enabled apps, GCN runs all over Kepler for compute performance. It really does make Titan Z a big question mark to most consumers.

i dont think any consumer buying this $3000 card is doing it with much logic

it's purely to grab money of biggest nvidia die-hards, or for those with no financial limitations and/or buseiness write-offs
