Caselabs SMA8 & positive air pressure

Thread Starter
Hello and a disclaimer: I'm a complete noob to water cooling smile.gif

This is gonna be my first wc build and I plan on doing it with the Caselabs SMA8. My setup will be one 480 radiator in the bottom, another 480 at the top, and a 240 at the front.

My concern though with this setup - and maybe the SMA8 in general - is achieving positive air pressure in the upper chamber to prevent dust build-up. So for that reason, I had in mind to have the top 480 rad pull air in, and the front 240, plus a single rear 120 fan, pull air out. So in essence, this will give me 4x 120 in and 3x 120 out.

My hardware is nothing fancy: 1x OC 2500k + 1x OC GTX 780.

This question is probably ridiculous - considering the amount radiators I'm gonna put into this thing biggrin.gif - but anyway, I'd love to hear your opinions? As warm air rises, this setup will basically suck it in at the top after it's been heated and blown out at the front/rear of the case. Would you do it differently? Have a better idea for positive air pressure?

warm air does not rise. The warm air is heat, and it transfers thermal energy, so it describes an action, not a mass or state. So cooler air displaces the 'warmer air'.

long story short, its been cussed and recussed a lot on these forums.. Experiment. I would point the front rad as intakes, so you'd have 6 fans worth pushing air into the case and getting sucked out by a single rear fan.

Much more effective use of intake .. sort of like a barrel discharging ... all in one direction.

watch my post get called out ;-)

Hmm, that's an interesting idea, haven't thought about just letting them all blow inward. Question then would be the noise though, as this is very important to me. But I guess with so many rads, the fans are anyway going to run slow so there shouldn't be a noise issue caused by turbulances or outward pressure, right?

Also, with this configuration, would I have an issue doing push-pull on the front 240, noise-wise? As that is something I'm considering, for esthestics.

um, guess I was short on sugar. 240 rad in front, go push-pull - low speed = low noise and dependent on rad fin count, low speed fans may just be the needed settings.

It would certainly add to the pressure blowing thru. As for aesthetics, many of us prefer the push-pull look. OTOH, there is a lot to be said with push fans out of sight.

With positive pressure, it isn't simply more fans blowing in or pushing than, than pushing out, but it helps ! You haven't mentioned components - cpu, gpu(s) - what else you plan on putting under water - but the more components under water, the more rad/fan units you'll need. Rule of thumb is 1x 120mm rad/fan per component plus one unit.

Now, granted with a 480 push-pull in top and a 240 push-pull in front, that's a lotta fans blowing down and back. Apart from providing rad cooling, the fans will also help keep air moving over tubing, res, pump possibly - components - as a cooling aid, however slight.

In general, the more fans pushing air to the traditional rear single exhaust fan, the greater the positive pressure, avoiding loopbacks of small air streams. I subscribe to the Silverstone model of positive pressure; also note the bit about open and closed gpu cases and their effect on pressure flows.

Experimentation is the variable, tho. There are plenty of builders that will place exhaust fans at top or in front and back ... which tome violates the simple rule of more intake than exhaust, but hey ! its their build. But with CL cases accomodating such long rads, your possibilities in setup change, but you can't escape the effects of negative pressure, imho.

I suppose a perfect model for demonstrating positive pressure would be a setup with smoke run thru a build, much like Silverstone does with their AP181 air penetrator fan model.
