[Techspot] OCZ RevoDrive 350 PCI-E SSD Review

Pros: OCZ's RevoDrive 350 is a decent value next to rivals by Asus, Mushkin and others, it's easier than dealing with separate SSDs, and it's crazy fast by modern standards.

Cons: It's pricey. Not outrageous compared to 2011's RevoDrive 3 X2 and not exactly a bad value, but at $530 the 240GB model costs almost as much as our entire budget box.

About time, I was wandering if we'd see another Revo before Toshiba bought them out... I'd say 480GB is the sweet spot, I can cope fine with a 240Gb system drive but I find I have to manage the space a lot more.

Shame the speed is still at a big premium, are we going to see any other interface supersede this in the near future?

Basically, RAID 0 is still mostly useless for normal desktop/gaming usage, and the RevoDrive is only good if you're working with RAW image files or large movie files. Otherwise, you're better off with normal consumer SSDs. No surprise here.

Is this marketed as a consumer/prosumer drive or an enterprise drive?

RevoDrive has been consumer but is Toshiba continuing this or pivoting the branding?

Definitely aimed at the dead centre between those markets, smaller studios and freelancers. I've used it as my main system/programs drive for years, I can't afford a FusionIO so Revo was the only realistic option if I wanted those speeds (at the time). It's quite a niche product but it certainly gets the attention when put on a graph with the SATA SSDs, so it could also be a marketing thing so people take note of OCZ as a fast manufacturer?

edit: Sorry, I read "Prosumer" as professional, so really I mean it's aimed at just above prosumer and below big companies that have multimillion budgets to spend on storage.

Not very impressive, far too expensive considering the fairly minor improvements in performance over a regular high end SATA3 drive. I mean what was the point of upgrading it to a x8 pcie 2.0 link if the drive cannot even fully saturate a x4 link?

The whole RAID-on-card architecture seems a bit obsolete now considering all the native pcie drives coming out now and in the near future. Sandforce SF3700 based drives should be able to easily beat this when they come out in the latter part of the year.

I just read the review. Looks pretty impressive to me. It's on the pricy side, but as always the cost will come down over time. This is certainly to wave of the future!

I have the same thoughts along these lines. IMHO your better off with a couple 250Gb, make raid0 array. No trim is not available, its not a must have.

You guys have pretty high standards if you think that's fairly minor improvements over a SATA3 drive. But seriously, apart from the price issue, what's got you thinking it's not that fast? I was thinking it'd be my next drive but if there's something I'm missing I'd like to know.

Isn't trim available with Ivy Bridge chipsets and above or something? I think I remember reading that awhile back.
