Can someone tell me the speed of my ram

Thread Starter
Hi guys im looking to know the speed of my ram. I downloaded CPU-z but im not sure where to read the speed. From memory it was 1600mhz, but none of the numbers seem to be close to it.

Could someone please tell me how to read my memory speed from the picture

Thanks biggrin.gif

That seems like it's really low speed ram, i'm considering upgrading and the computer place im looking at doesn't even sell ram that slow.

If I were to upgrade, would it be wise to put higher speed ram in on top of what I already have? or should I completely replace it.
Also, would It be better to get an 8gig stick @ 2400mhz or 16gig @ 1600mhz? I mainly use my rig for gaming if it makes a difference.

Thanks for the replies!

Nope its ddr= double data rate and the 3 stands for the generation. DDR3 is the third gen DDR memory.

As for why the memory is running at that speed. That depends on the ration and BCLK clock and the memory speed ratio. If you just want to raise the memory speed then go into the BIOS and change the memory speed Multiplier (the next step up should get you ~1350Mhz and the step after that to ~1620), but do keep in mind that depending on how good your ram is you might have to loosen the CAS latencies in order for the ram to stay stable at the higher clock speeds. You know what speed and latency your ram is rated for?

It's probably more than 4 years old considering nehalem was the last mainstream arch with triple channel memory, i doubt he'll be able to achieve 1600 MHz with it. 1333 is more realistic i think.

Imo, just replacing your RAM is not worth it. Either replace nothing or replace MOBO + CPU + RAM. 2x 4GB at 1600 or 1866 MHz is fine for gaming. Anything above that both in size as in speed will give only a marginal increase in performance at a much higher price.

I would't be so sure. There where plenty of 1600Mhz kits back in the early x58 days. I know I own some wink.gif If its an decen't kit then it should do 1600Mhz with CL9 or CL10. Though he might need to adjust voltage settings for that.

In any case ram speed isn't that big of an deal anyway (unless you are using BLCK to overclock the CPU) and even less so when gaming is concerned so I do agree that replacing the ram would be a waist of money. Really even when going form 1066MHz to 1866Mhz the real world gains tend to be incredibly small.

Just post a screenshot of SPD tab. It shows rated frequency/Timings for the ram sticks.

Overclocking by BLCK/FSB/HTT may cause ram instability on stock settings. That's because some sticks cannot handle high base clocks. My RipjawsX require tRFC at 300ns (160ns Stock) and 1.6Vdimm (1.5V stock) to run at stock with 300mhz HTT (stock is 200mhz).

Maybe replace my RAM and Mobo yes, but what would be the point in replacing my i7-950 which only ever runs at like 5% capacity in the task manager performance tab? Seems to be a waste of money to replace that when I barely use what it's capable of. My memory usage on the other hand is almost capped when playing newer games while also have a few internet tabs open which tends to slow my whole pc down. Seems like either adding 1x8gb stick or replacing the 6gb with 2x8gb sticks would fix this issue. I don't really understand why i'd need a whole new mobo + cpu to go with it.
