No matter how good it may/can be, people can always hype it up as being ten times better than any production ever has the hope of being, regardless of who's feedback they take.

It has rectangular nebula... Why not just add in a pulsar with a pulse longer than 10 seconds or a black hole that doesn't produce frame dragging?

Even though I tend to agree with the OP and feel like this game is over hyped and looked at as the next messiah I do feel the need to counter a point I see many times.

People like to say that no one who drops $1000 on a game will be able to see the truth if the game sucks. Honestly I myself have used this train of thought to. Thing is though I was wrong and the reason to me is this. People who have the disposable income level that allows them to drop $1000 on a game are probably not going to suffer b/c of it.

Think of it like this. As a regular person who doesn't have a ton of disposable income when you go to a fairly expensive restaurant that you've heard good things about and the food sucks. Do you say to yourself "Well man that was good" simply b/c you spent a lot of money? No, you'll probably say "man what waste of 50 dollars". The same will hold true for people dropping thousands on Star Citizen. Just b/c the dropped a ton of money does not mean they can't hate it later and feel like it was a waste. To the people dropping that kind of cash $1000 is probably no different then a $100 to us. You can't fault them for that at all. Just because someone may be rich does not mean they don't have/experience the same range of human emotions us poorer folk feel.

I'm sure they'll make a good one player game. But as for the multiplayer game, I do think its going to be a huge disappointment for many.

For me the reason is there are so many different profiles of gamer who like space ships, and RSI appear to be telling each and everyone one of them that they are making the game they've always dreamed of. I was in a star citizen guild ( bit crazy I know since they game isnt even out), but in that guild I realised just how diverse a group have been attracted to the game. Guys who like hard core flight sims, fps shooter fans, mine craft, wow, casual, PvP, and each and everyone one of them had got the impression the game was being made for their tastes and preferences.

This was not because they were willfully disregarding clarity on the subject from RSI, but rather because RSI had encouraged this belief.

Maybe RSI genuinely think they can pull this off, keep everyone happy, maybe some people think that having 40 million will allow them to. I think its madness and in the end it will either be an unholy mess, or they will have to finally decide who this game is for, which in turn will really disappoint a significant portion of the rest of their backers.

You can even sense this problem because for the longest time, on every single subject that would require some kind of choice in preference for one group or anther, for example control method, POV (3rd person/1st person), PvE/PVP, they are always coming up with some horrible compromise to keep everyone appeased - or at least until the game comes out and all these half measures are revealed as such.

Is this greed? Is this stupidity? Or arrogance? Lack of fundamental clarity of vision beyond the generic? Lack of guts/confidence to put their flag in the ground somewhere? Or just an indicator that they've lost control of the express train? I really don't know. Only Chris Roberts and his inner circle can answer that. But I can say that while before I was enthusiastic I have now lost hope because for me it is key that the creatives/developers have a clear idea about who they are making this game for beyond the most all encompassing definitions.

Seen in this light, this 40 million, because it now requires them to try to make everyone happy, is actually a big problem and one that will never go away.

The first time someone loses a ship to a 14 year old kid and has to buy another one, be prepared to hear all sorts of stuff over the mic.

yeah but, unless there is a super easy way to get it, I have a feeling that many uninsured ships out there are going to crash and burn and many players are going to get very mad.

I am sure ship insurance will be super easy to get. Probably like it is implemented in Eve. Buy it when your docked and it runs for a set amount of time. That time normally being months long.
