An Independent Study: Does The Speed Of RAM Directly Affect FPS During High CPU Overhead Scenarios? - Page 18

I'd imagine RAM Channel count matters if the game is actually hungry for ram bandwidth. Usually that's not the case, but maybe BF4 is?

So, you had two sticks of RAM and added two more?

As for bandwidth, no game benchmarks I have seen shows much improvement if any from dual to quad channel RAM. It's a few FPS at best. Seeing double tells me something else is going on. Not sure what.

Sadly games don't tend to make full use of quad channel memory configurations. BF4 most likely needed more than 8GB RAM for data swapping which lead to a sizable performance increase. BF4 loves fast RAM and lots of it.

Do you mind testing Grand Theft Auto 5?
Actually I do not believe gta5 is all that demanding on system memory at least for current gpu's. I recently was messing around with tri sli and surround gaming (aka eyefinity) i disabled the surround so that i could watch my web activity on second or third monitors. While i was messing about i found that overclocking the gpu made a huge difference in area's that i had originally thought were cpu bottle necked or just poorly optimized. but adding a sli support more than doubled my frame rate in the country side meaning that with all advanced settings max as well as everything on ultra increasing gpu speed in creased fps dramatically. So it is very unlikely that memory speed would give you a very good boost in gta5 on a quad channel memory setup. I can not say for sure on a dual channel tho.

Well thats the thing its hard to say, it would very much so seem to be the case. This was i'm sure on a mantle driver so the optimization might have been really good and so it is possible that the extra channels added bandwidth that was usable. That is why i was hoping someone else could confirm as i do not have my amd cards installed any longer (i should have tested with 32GB installed in dual channel back then lol). I can test this on my nvidia cards as well but different driver and or api completely so things really may not be comparable at all..

Nice find Bradley, it seems most games would benefit. Albeit for a little too much effort compared to the payoff imo. Still nice to know theres room to improve FPS on the memory side of things.

Sorry, not buying the 2sticks -> 4 sticks in quad-channel giving 100% fps increase anecdote. I hear a claim, but no empirical evidence.

I have 16gb system ram. The only time I've gone over 8gb is when I'm running other things that take up system memory, such as Ramdisk. If moving from dual channel to quad channel, 16gb to 32gb gave you a 60 fps performance boost then something else is at play. I'd say even you have a lot of junk running that's sucking up your system resources, or, Vsync is causing the massive fps drop when only using dual channel 16gb. I could see catching a few extra fps going quad 32gb, but not that much.

Just upgraded from 8 GB ddr3 1600 to 16 ddr3 2400 ..i5 3570k of to 4.6 ..gtx 970. Observed the same differences a significant boost to minimum frames. In switcher 3 novigrad I used to have drops from 60 to 53ish now its locked 60 at all times. Similar results across all games acu and metal gear v ..gta v. It seems faster ram allows the CPU to breathe used to have 99% CPU usage in ACU and switcher 3 novigrad now its generally around 80%
