[TC] Amazon’s Smartphone Design Reportedly Leaks

Quote:
Amazon’s smartphone is looking more and more like an imminent reality, and now BGR is bringing what it says is the first look at the actual design of the hardware to the table. The phone appeared in an actual photo in a previous BGR article, but now a render shows what it looks like under its protective housing, and the results are – really not at all that surprising.

Samsung-more-iPhone-like design, WP-like tiles. They only seem to have their "own" logo at the back?

Yeah, even the rumored specs are more iPhone than Galaxy S but I guess it's geared for the US market. It's just a run of the mill, 2011 styled smartphone imo

A few predictions:

1. It will definitely be cheap. I'm thinking $250 or so depending on its specs. Amazon definitely wants to undercut the Nexus 5 by an appreciable amount.
2. Qualcomm silicon under the hood. The Fire HDX has a Snap800 and that worked out really well for them then. Though, with how light some OS's are (like WP8/8.1), an MSM8960 would probably work fine.
3. 1920x1080 screen. While for the size 1280x720/768 would work fine (Lumia 920, Moto X), Amazon loves their pixel density (Fire HDX)
4. It's not going to have an SD slot. They are definitely going to push you towards their cloud services
5. They're going to throw in a LOT of goodies with the phone. Expect loads of cloud storage and a free Prime membership with the purchase of the phone or something like that.
6. Amazon services are going to blanket the phone. This will likely mean ads "Special Offers" rolleyes.gif as well.
7. Based on that screenshot, it seems unlikely that it will have a removable battery. frown.gif

All of this is, of course, pure speculation. One thing that isn't though: Amazon is wanting to go to war with Google and Microsoft in the cloud. Google's cloud-based services are deeply ingrained in KitKat and Microsoft's show up in a big way in 8.1 (Cortana). Amazon isn't wanting to compete in the hardware/device market for the sake of winning that market. They traditionally use their devices to usher you towards their cloud services (see #4, 5, and 6 above)

Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Say what you want about Live Tiles but Microsoft really changed the game with their flat UI that everyone from Sony to Google are copying. Not to mention Kinect... They are really pushing the UI forward.
