Starting SM8 build list

Thread Starter
I'm starting my list for a SM8 build. I'm starting with an air cooled then going liquid later. My plan is to have four 120mm fans in a top mount drop in style, then two 120mm front fans. My first question is, what parts do I need for these two fan installations?

Next question, is the black case painted or anodized black. Is it possible to order a silver brushed aluminum case?

Any suggestions for a good fan controller?

I see there are two types of single flex bay fan mounts, a 25mm and a 38mm. Does the 25mm mount with 25mm fan have enough room for a fan filter or would it be better to put a 25mm fan in a 38mm mount to make room for the filter.

Thanks for the help.

  • just order the case as you would use it for watercooling and use it for air until you can afford the water.
  • case is powdercoated black and the odds of you getting a special order are pretty rare, if you really want source the "brushed aluminum" service locally (i doubt this could be done)
  • fan controller is really up to you look into lamptron and aquaero for the "best"
  • 25mm fan mount will give you enough room for most filters with a 25mm fan, same goes for 38mm.

Pretty much this ^^^ The manufacturing processes used preclude brushed/anodized finishes.

Thanks for the help!! How about fans, which 120mm fans do you guys like the best?

Fan recommendation will vary according to whether you want air or water cooling - the blades are designed differently. I suggest you go and look at the existing discussions in the air cooling and water cooling forums.

Thanks, I'll check out that air cooled forum, didn't see it before.

Have another question for you guys. On the order sheet for the SM8 it gives three choices for the bottom chassis mount, "120.4 radiator mount", "140.3 radiator mount", or "solid".

My question is, does solid mean no holes and no removable cover plates? Does the "120.4 radiator mount" mean 4 120mm holes with screw on cover plates?

It appears from picture 12 of 35 and 15 of 35 that yes, you get cover plates for the fan holes but notice that the PSU obstructs the rear-most hole. If you put a 120.4 radiator or a 140.3 radiator you would need alternative plans for the PSU such as a pedestal.

It is not shown, but I would speculate that the solid bottom would still include a cutout for the rear 120mm because that is used for the PSU vent but I would wait for an accurate statement from CL first.

For now I have no plans for using the bottom as a fan holder or radiator, {air cooled for now}, but I would like to have the ability to use them later if I choose. What I want is four 120mm holes with cover plates to seal the holes till later, but I'm not sure which option this is on the order form for the bottom chassis mount. Would this be the "Solid" option or the "120.4 radiator" option. PSU is no problem as I plan on installing it at the top of the case.

You would want the 120.4 radiator mount option. The solid option is really for special applications where a solid mounting surface is needed or a custom cutout is required.
