PCH bandwidth on x99 motherboards?

Thread Starter
Anyone know if x99 motherboards will have pch bandwidths over 2gb/s? i believe z87 motherboards are 1.3-1.6gb/s and they have 6 sata 3 ports and x99 boards will have 10 sata 3 ports. just wondering because if its is 2 or higher i may be able to go 4-5 ssds in raid 0 without a controller.

You only need to make one thread wink.gif

As I said in the other one, I would not recommend anyone run more than a max of 3 current Gen SSD's in chipset RAID (0?) because the 3rd drive is the last one which will provide any actual speed improvements.

I don't expect to see a change in PCH link speed for some time, as it's not even close to a bottleneck for anything besides trying to post large but ultimately of no real world benefit bandwidth numbers.

Right now, to anyone who is considering large dollars for large(ly zero benefit) solid state array(s), I would instead enthusiastically direct you to what is perhaps the most important SSD since the X25, the Intel DC S3700 in 400GB or 800GB sizes.
I have played with SSD RAID a lot, and I do have a few small arrays, specifically for caching the writes to the parity arrays (6-10 HDD RAID6/6E) serving as a front-end that makes parity array performance bearable by masking the pathetic write speeds.

The thing is, in desktop use, I have never seen SSD RAID provide a perceivable much less worthwhile performance improvement.
The first time I sat behind my system with a fresh OS install on an 800GB S3700, well it was the biggest ":O" moment since the first time I ever used an SSD.

The key benefit, orders of magnitude better consistency than the best consumer drive, sounds like nothing to geteexcited about. Well, the reality is so impressive that I cannot believe that no other company has pursued this design goal.
NOT ONCE has the drive(s, now) ever caused a single hitch or slowdown, everythingis ssimply ALWAYS fast, and after months of heavy use, when I added a second, I could not distinguish between the heavily used and fresh out of box drive. They literally don't lose the "brand new" feeling, what you see the first day of use is exactly how you will see the next 17 Peta bytes of writes!
