i5 2500k 4.0Ghz + Sapphire R9 290 Crossfire - Page 2

A higher OC wouldnt hurt though. i noticed a pretty decent fps jump going from stock to 4.8 on my 2600k.

Also, do you have a custom fan profile? the cards might be throttling also?

Well, with my former setup playing bf3 single player gpu usage of two cards were 89-98%, but when playing online gpu usage dropped to roughly half because multiplayer is much more cpu demanding. I have empirical data on this because I have tested it myself. Im im not wrong at resulutions like 1080p you are more cpu bound than on 1440p.

We got a couple of 290-series cards, and have on multiple occations run them in crossfire. On my personal rig with a 2500k, the cpu-graph looks like OP's. My brothers old 3570k however, does not. We have not seen scaling issues on the 2500k, 3570k and a 4770k. Sure, the scaling was probably a bit better on the 4770k, but that doesn't mean there is no improvement when using older and lower-end parts.

I would say games are more likely to make use of the two R9 290s than a 6-core CPU. Most games don't even support past 2 or 4 cores, yet alone 6. I would never tell someone to give up GPU performance in game to increase CPU performance slightly.

I feel like his R9 290s are throttling during BF4 gaming. If they are hitting 94C, that is definitely the case. Otherwise his CPU just needs a small overclock bump.

Yep, that's what i thought as well. these puppies get hot quickly (assuming he has reference models), if you can't hear them, you can be sure that you're throttling.

Should've mentioned this before, I'm on 1440p.

The cards don't exceed 70 degrees celcius.
I'm not quite familiar with the term 'throttling" though, I thought that only happens when the GPU's run too hot.

It depends on your CCC settings, target temperature in overdrive is the temp at which the card will throttle. you can leave this at 95. Just set max fan speed to 100 in Overdrive, and use a different program like MSI afterburner to make a custom fanprofile.

I used MSI but doing this resulted in constant 100% usage (atleast that's what Afterburner told me), even when I'm sitting on my desktop.
Currently I use HWiNFO64.

Also I just remember having these spikes back when I had my HD 7950, it was caused by a couple of Windows Updates (KBsomenumbers)

70 on the core? how about the vrms? GPUZ will show vrm temps.

you have to get a better cooler and oc that cpu at least 4.5GHz. if those were Titans, would you leave the i5 at 4GHz? the name Titan gives that notion that the cpu needs to be capable. i am not saying that the i5 is not but even a SB-E cpu will bottleneck these gpus when left at stock.

edit: i see you used to have a 7950. one 290 is about equal to 2 7950s. you now have 4 7950s in your system. 4.

Well it looks like your GPUs aren't the cause since they are running pretty "cool", at least cooler than my r9 290 when left at auto fan speeds.

It really may just be your CPU bottlenecking the GPUs, but it should handle them better at 4.5~5GHz. The PH-TC14PE you mentioned earlier is a really good heatsink, one of the best actually. Just make sure your case can handle the size (your rigbuilder is outdated, so I can't tell what you currently have).

VRM's are around 55, lets just call that 60.
The Max temp is 95. So I assume no throttling there.

Yeah I'll definitely look for some coolers, I've also noticed the Noctua NH-U14s. I'll definitely have no ram clearence issues with that. (stupid high profile ram mad.gif)
