There was, kinda. The EV1 and the original Honda Insight were the most aerodynamic vehicles ever commercially manufactured. While people technically weren't given the chance to buy the EV1, it's design, as well as the design of the Insight, didn't lend itself to consumer popularity. The Insight could get over 60mpg on gasoline. Imagine a diesel hybrid? Still, like these eco-comp cars, it was limited by it's design and was only a 2-seater. Production vehicles need a lot of safety equipment, which adds weight, so if it'd been built in the early 90's, it might have been an 80+mpg vehicle.

But what I mean is that despite all efforts in my opinion it will take a looong time before any true alternative energy will hit the market, the governement should promote and build GREEN energy massively, yet, do they really do it ?? they do, but not "massively" I guess.

There are rumors of "free" energy devices lately too, we can only hope that it's a reality and that the thing will be commercially globally soon, imagine the impact on the big energy industry !

*removes his tinfoil hat" aha lol, by the way while I'm at it, I saw the movie conspiracy theory the other day for the first time, really good movie ! and inspired by real events tongue.gif
Yeah that's true, there are a lot of variables to the design too. But my point is, even if there is a viable replacement for the modern engine it is being suppressed so it won't become popular. Electric engines are a great innovation, but factors such as battery weight, required travel distance, power, etc. limit opportunities with such technology. Then again, electric companies would have a field day with that technology... so they have plenty of support backing electric car projects (if we're still considering the conspiracy factor). It's much like how electric companies promote energy reduction and as soon as energy usage goes down they increase their price per kW wink.gif.

Yea, it's for instance Hydrogen motors, sounds good in the paper, but how do we create hydrogen ? thanks to electricity ! so is it really worth it ? hey maybe if all our energy ressources came from Green energy yea !

One thing to consider about that also is the fact that hydrogen is very dangerous... we might aswell use explosives to run our motors LOL. but yea, dangerous to sell explosive on a mass scale I guess.. and it would have to be explosive who doesn't pollute much.. if you take even the gun powder (or bullet powder for instance) that stuff pollutes it's full of chemicals frown.gif, so yea there is always a problem when trying to make new technology.. hopefully we'll see the true green energy being use on a mass scale soon.

Hydrogen, well-to-wheel, is still a more efficient fuel than gasoline. Even if it comes from natural gas reforming, which is currently the most cost effective way to make the fuel. Hydrogen, as a fuel, is actually less dangerous than gasoline.

all these eco-green people never make anything with pleasing aesthetic. Thats the main reason why most of their inventions never flourish.

This. I wouldn't hate the prius so much if it wasn't so hideous. Just because a car is technologically advanced/futuristic doesn't mean it should look like a space ship.

Clever on Shell's part. Let's the school's hack up the R&D costs and then they receive free data to sell or pass along as the sponsor.

While I agree these kind of cars are never going to make it on the road there is a car that is road worthy and gets hundreds of MPG. . . . VOLKSWAGEN XL1. O whats that, it won't be sold in the US? Surprise surprise. rolleyes.gif

As said already these cars do not certify for normal consumer retail. Without adding the extra weight and power from A/C and power (everything) the safety features of cars alone add a lot of weight to a vehicle. If you could remove all the extra steel from a sedan I bet you could easily add ~5 mpg to the fuel efficiency or more. Switch out the comfortable seating with super light materials and you could drop a few hundred pounds of excess weight, each seat probably weighs 40-50lbs.

Now each vehicles safety rating is also by model/size/type. That means that a 6 star Sedan if it hit another equal class sedan would give you a very high chance of living. That Sedan hitting a truck would offer far less chance of living, say on a high speed head on collision. This super efficient car is probably a class -1, meaning if you hit a shopping cart you'd probably hurt yourself tongue.gif

I remember a story maybe 10 years ago about some guy taking a Jeep Wrangler and having it do +100 mpg. A much more interesting story smile.gif Of course I can't find that story anymore tongue.gif
