Torn between 3 monitor types (for Gaming)

Hey all! I just want to start off by saying I really do apologize if this question has been beaten to death but honestly it seems like most gamers are so torn between what type of monitor is best and what to get.

Now I am looking for 1 monitor. At the moment I use a dual monitor setup with my right hand monitor just being for netflix/twitch whatever. My main monitor is - ASUS VS239H-P Black 23" 5ms (GTG) HDMI Widescreen LED Monitor 250 cd/m2 ASCR 50,000,000:1, IPS Panel - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236288

My main issue with the VS239H-P IPS monitor I have is that I get some weird coloration in the corners if im not looking at the monitor DEAD ON. Any up or down angels causes a weird glow affect in the corners. That being said I am looking for a new monitor for gaming and was wondering if you all could help me out.

What I'm looking for:

- 300$ or under
- 23in or larger
- Play mainly MMO's and RPG's

What I am not sure about:

- Should I get another IPS monitor?
- Are 16:10 monitors better than 16:9 monitors for gaming? (Like 1200p vs 1080p)
- What about 120Hz monitor? I feel like I don't see many issues with ghosting anyway but I'm not sure.

So for a hardcore MMO/RPG gamer what would you guys suggest? My main interest right now is how 16:10 affects gaming, it looks like you have more screen real estate but loose some width FOV? I have no idea! Any help would be greatly appreciated smile.gif

I'm kind of in the same boat, as I am also torn on a new gaming monitor.

I have done a ton or research lately, and based on your criteria, I think you should stick with IPS or equivalent. ASUS is known to sometimes have quality issues, and you may just have gotten a bad egg. I think a bright and vivid display would do the most justice for MMOs/RPGs.

There is the 120+hz reasoning that even though you do not need great response time for MMOs, the smoothness and fluidity will make the experience better, which it most likely will. The issue is, these monitors only come in TN panels that do not produce the best images.

I have a 1920x1200 monitor, and I think the vertical real estate does improve the gaming experience. However, there is not much of a decent selection at the <$300 price point. Most people are gaming on 16:9, and it shouldn't be that bad.

Personally, as a long time MMO/RPG'er, I would go with something like this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824260174

It has good picture quality, good connectivity, slim bezel, and a good stand.

So it is a trade off. 16:9 should get you the best picture quality for the price, 120+hz will give you the best fluidity and worst picture quality, 16:10 will give you the least options.

Thank you for the recommendation! I have actually never owned a Dell monitor ever, usually all Asus and I think one westinghouse I've had in the past. But I will take a look at this! biggrin.gif

Hi I was looking into 16:10 IPS options not very long ago I was recommended the BenQ BL2411PT, Asus VS24AH and Asus PB248Q. The BenQ is the best apparently but most expensive. I was told the VS24AH was the best option for just a PC screen, (I.e not watching films or Blurays) because it has some scaling issues when trying to display 16:9.

I ordered the VS24AH as it was significantly cheaper, unfortunately it is in another country at the moment waiting for me to move there and pick up in a couple months so I cant tell you first hand what I think.

Theres a couple of options for you to look at anyway.

My thread here, I believe I received some very good advice if you want to have a look smile.gif

I like Dell panels and I like 16:10 but combining both makes them not cheap. I do not game however I would take an ultrasharp over just about everything in their price range

So I was checking out monitors, what do you guys think about this? http://www.amazon.com/Dell-UltraSharp-24-Inch-LED-lit-Monitor/dp/B005JN9310/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1399751792&sr=8-1&keywords=U2412M

Also as a side note I'm more curious what people think about 16:10 monitors for gaming, I hear people say you loose vertical FoV and some games have crazy black bars on the top and bottom. Do you guys think its worth it to go 16:10 for gaming as an improvement?

Well the u2412m is one of the ones I was recommended not to get because of the backlighting thing in my link. So you know where I stand. As far as 16:10 gaming goes I have no practical experience yet. However I am intrigued by the PWM dimming thing. If someone makes an issue of that to me I think its worth listening to, why would they bother otherwise. The u2412m has that effect, the 16:9 monitors here dont have it. Up to you dude smile.gif

Korean monitors may be worth the risk, hopefully for you this bump will get you an answer on that too smile.gif
