Fan Speed controller burn on Sapphire R9-290 Vapor-x

After less than 2 weeks my new (290 sapphire vapor-x)
I woke up with a strong electrical pcb smell in my room, I immediately turned everything off, cellphone charger, amp, A/C , laptop etc, go hunting, for the smelled pc several times. Couldn't smell anything like it. Eventually decide it was my pc. Boot back up everything is fine.
Open case to make sure nothing is smoking feel the heatsinks, make sure nothing is too hot. Then I see that 2 of the 3 fans weren't spinning on the graphics card. Weird, check the little smart fan switch, nope its off,

Ran bf4, runs fine, 80fps+, no frame drops nothing, still note that fans aren't spinning, Removed card, sniff the card a bit, got a whiff of the smell, so and behold, there the smell is, check the card and it has a burnt mark on it.

HOW does this even happen. I checked that nothing was touching the card so no random piece of metal from the case nothing, its seems to be part of the other 2 fans, fan controller...I have never seen anything or heard of anything like this happen...warranty time i guess FFS, and my MB just went 5 days ago.

With a motherboard failure and now a video card failure I would consider looking at the PSU. It could just be a coincidence but two major component failures within a week or two of each other is not very common without an outside influence.

Since the card is only two weeks old you should be able to warranty from where you bought it. If there is an issue and you need to go through our RAM process be sure to send me the info when you submit the RAM and I will see if I can help expedite it. However my understanding is that outside the US the supplier is handling warranties usually for the first 90 days or so in most cases.

In the meantime I have passed this info along to some of the engineers so they can see if they can figure out what might have happened.

Replace that PSU before your house burns down.

I considered it, the thing is the mb was an ECS and it was 5years old, when i reviewed the damge on the ECS board i saw that the VRM heatsink wasn't actually making contact with broken VRM module...there was dust between the thermal pad, and the module,

Rest of the PC is fine, im still using an Sapphire 5870 vapor-x which is closing on 6 years old now and no problems, that was the main reason i bought another Sapphire card because of build quality of the 5870

But will be definitely sending it back my suppliers, hopefully get a swap out... atleast considering the price of this card in my country (600 USD+-) equivalent

I have had (2) Sapphire Vapor-X 290's fail on me within 2 weeks of each other. All of a sudden I am watching a video and then power goes off on computer and then 1 long and 3 short beeps. Put my old card in and it works fine. I am awaiting a response from Sapphire but will RMA this as well and may switch to a 780. Upsetting that same thing happened at same time. I even bought a new power supply thinking that was issue. frown.gif

When I get home I will look at your picture and look to see if any burnt connectors near fan supply but the fans don't turn on anymore but the blue Sapphire lights up.

card was replaced on monday, via RMA , the suppliers thought it had something to do with OCing because you know logic...(read sarcastically for the ones that didn't get it.)
because burn marks automatically = users fault and cause,

IMO, I think the capacitor blew up and I've seen caps blow up before not a small but they do blow if connected incorrectly (dc current)

sorry to hear both cards went o.O i wouldn't be happy at all. This means there might be a manufacturing problem...but we can only speculate
