What is benching and is it fun?

So from what I understand, benching is trying to get high scores in benchmarks, is this correct? I need some convincing to get into benching. I am thinking of starting with a phase system and then get some liquid nitrogen. Why is it fun? I am genuinely interested in starting this as a serious hobby.

Yes that's correct.

But you don't need anyone to convince you for you to start... You don't need ln2 or phase to start doing it. Just use your current rig and experiment, then if you find it really fun, try ln2, etc. You need a lot of experience first, learn how to do a basic oc. thumb.gif

Is it just oc cpu, or does oc ram and gpu benefit the scores too?

It's where you go to a park with a lot of people. Sit on a "bench" near the basketball court with people playing on it and devour the juiciest, beefsteak hamburger as messy as you can.

You much be in the obese category by current medical standards to pull with off.

That is pretty funny. You have a wild imagination :-)

You'd be able to upgrade your junk with the funding you'd spend on LN2/Phase, unless you want like the world's fastest 6950. Newer parts would pump your benches higher than an extreme OC wink.gif

'Why is it fun' is a question you'd have to discover for yourself. As stated above, you'd be best off learning about overclocking your current system. If you spend a few hours trying to get another 100 MHz out of the top end of your OC limit then you can probably determine how seriously you'd want to take it.

So why does it take a few hours. I am not at home at the moment so I cannot oc right now. But isnt it just bumping up the multiplier? Btw, I have saved up around 6k for a new rig and wanted to put around 4 of it into the pc and the other 2 into the cooling, so my budget is pretty big if I were to get into it. Currently, I have a 6950 at base clock and a I5 2500k with a hyper 212. When I get home I will try to oc as much as I can but airflow in my case sucks.

Also, are test bench cases recommended even if pets are in the house. They do not go into the room housing the computer but are present in the house (a dog and a cat). They shed moderately, but I can put a cover on the case when I am not using it

I can bench 600 lbs. OK, not all at once.
