Upgraded mobo, now Win 7 Pro asking for new license.

Thread Starter
Hi everyone,

Last night I had upgraded my motherboard from an ASUS P8Z77‑V LK to an ASUS Maximus V Formula. Upon booting into Windows 7 Pro, I received a a message stating that Windows 7 activation is required. I am using a legitimate license on a genuine copy of Windows 7 Pro. Is this activation message related to the mobo upgrade?

Second, I have a genuine copy of Windows 8.1 Pro and license, should I go ahead and do the upgrade? I have been postponing it because of my lack of enthusiasm around Windows 8. Plus, I have been enjoying my CPU temp widgets that I won't be able to use on the new OS. I use Steam and Origin quite often, will upgrading affect these? What are the pros/cons?

Current specs (a lot of this will be changing within the next month as I prepare to assemble my loop):
Corsair Obsidian 550D
Intel i7 3770k
ASUS Maximus V Formula
2 x EVGA GeForce GTX 670 FTW 2gb in SLI
2 x CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 1600
SAMSUNG 840 EVO 250gb
Seagate Barracuda 3TB HDD
Corsair H80i
OCZ 750W ZT Series (de-stickered)
NZXT Sentry 2 Fan Controller
2 x Corsair AF120mm Quiet Edition
2 x Corsair AF140mm Quiet Edition

Did you buy an OEM license or full retail?
OEM usually sticks to the motherboard, and a full license can be used on any.
However, I'm reasonably sure you can just ring a number it will provide when you try activating it, and it usually will work.

^ This.
I have done this a few times before and I have never had a problem with them giving me a new key and it working.

Calling worked! That was simple. The question now becomes, should I upgrade?

Meant to add that I threw you both rep!

I have heard some pretty good things about 8.1 (never used it myself), that being said I don't think anyone will be able to tell you if you will like it or not. Steam and Origin should work the same, I would give it a try ( you can always go back if need be) thumb.gif

Just call MS and reactivate it.

Just so you know, calling the automated service and getting the key activated on a different motherboard is against the T&C for Microsoft and by extension makes it against the T&C on OCN. However, I'm glad you got it working.

Not had any problems with Windows 8 that I can think of.
The whole Metro thing is just stupid though, I've bought a program called Stardock which brought my start bar back and means I never have to look at Metro.
In fact, one or two problems I've had. I'm sure I had compatibility problems with some older games. Tomb Raider comes to mind, but I wasn't that bothered anyway. And it isn't a problem for me now, but on my older motherboard, it didn't support Fan Xpert for Windows 8, so I weren't able to control the fan speed from there. Got a new motherboard though, and that's all fine now.
Worth the upgrade? If you wouldn't miss the money to upgrade go for it. Wouldn't say it offers me anything more than 7 Pro though, supposedly will push out an extra few FPS though in games.

Is it? An OEM license is solely for one computer. Does changing the motherboard make it a new computer?

No, I am just curious if I should take the leap.

My understanding is that the one license can be transferred. It wouldn't make any sense otherwise. As an example, if you bought an HP branded PC and had to replace the motherboard due to a blown cap or decided to upgrade, how would that license be invalid? Also, if that were the case, wouldn't it make more sense to have some sort of hardware scan software that ran when you first activated Windows and then after a piece of hardware has been replaced? Otherwise, why allow re-activation of the same license? Just my 2cents.gif.

I may do it just to have the latest. I would heavily miss Windows 7 though, I feel like it has more of an "open feel" to it.

The likelihood of me reverting back to an older OS is slim-to-none. Too damn lazy! tongue.gif
