Then one year from now they'll introduce stuff that requires the Kinect, and I'm not talking about Kinect games.

I hope optimizations can occur, cause that would be quite the achievement.

They really shot themselves in the foot... they could have just released the system at $500 with a better gpu (7970) w/o Kinect... they've lost this generation.

I know it's still earlier but they don't have enough original IPs ...PS4 will be lead sku, whereas last gen 360 was lead sku... they're screw'd unless halo and gears are effin' jaw dropping (even then ppl will just say it would look better on PS4/PC).

I would argue quite the opposite, last generation sold about a hundred million more consoles than the previous. You had 100 million+ Wii, then 70 million+ of both the 360 and PS3. Compared to 100 million+ PS2 and merely 24 million Xbox and 21 million Gamecube.
Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if both Sony and Microsoft hit 100 million units this time around.

Either that or Steam hits half a billion users.

(and Nintendo is the reason Nintendo can't compete with MS/Sony, not hardware or market conditions. They have always acted in their own best interests first and let the rest fall away. You buy Nintendo hardware for Nintendo software. Always have, always will).

Kinect needed something like a Wiimote or Move type controller. The only thing I can think of to use Kinect for in most games is headtracking/body tracking for slight camera movement or lean mechanics.

I thought Nintendo missed out on it this gen. I expected them to release a console with improved motion controls with a Kinect like camera rahter than that tablet thing. Gesture control sucks. Kinect was good for voice commands but without a device for button input it was relegated to these small party/mini games and fitness. If they're removing it as mandatory that says a thing about current Kinect games in the pipeline. Their probably wasn't a really good game centered around Kinect controls. It's Microsofts baby and they couldn't think of any good use in games for it and since E3 is upcoming and they're removing it, I'm assuming none of their third party partners had anything they thought was compelling enough to keep the Kinect.

If they thought about something recently the game would still be years away and it would be hard for the Xbox to build momentum when the medias tech infatuation stopped caring about consoles with the onset of smartphones and tablets. I don't think they can sell at a loss. Still I wonder how expensive it is to produce a console without Kinect. That's still a tough sell with how publicized the power advantage a PS4 has over a Xbox One. They've been in the console business for a while now so its time to be a profitable business. They don't want any more pressure to either sell or close the gaming division.

edit: The health of the console industry will be interesting to watch the next couple of years. They both came out the gates running but that could just be the result of actually having a huge stock on release day to be able to sell millions the first couple of months. Nintendo might actually have less third party support this time around comared to the Gamecube. Might just be that there are less third party publishers anymore. Xbox One sales have slowed down considerably. I find it hard to believe a PS4 can make up for the combined weaker sales of Microsoft and Nintendo. Too many smartphones, tablets, soon to be a ton of VR headsets, and soon to be cheaper 4k televisions. Hard for a console to stand out to the general non-gaming forum consumer in all the glitz and glamour of the modern consumer electronics market. I don't see them being able to last another 8 year cycle without losing exitement to whatever the new and exiting technology is.

Ah, I see..... so M$ is pulling a Nintendo, and price dropping 6 months after the new console launch. Well, that's worked out so well for Nintendo so far.... I guess we'll have to see how M$ does. tongue.gif

They guaranteed us Halo 5 will be 1080p and 60fps, so hopefully they weren't just lying. Besides, I'm sure MS is going to put all it can into the game to make sure that happens.
