[EG] Confirmed: Watch Dogs PS4 900p, Xbox One 792p, both 30fps - Page 19

But that's it, It doesn't just accumulate power over night, the hardware just gets utilized better

On-top of that, there's already developers complaining about "bottlenecks" or simply constraints, the Project Cars developers said that the cores as weak, the dev team which are porting PlanetSide 2 to the PS4 say how it has to be heavily multi-threaded, even Sucker Punch Productions the developers of Second Son say how the cpu is bottleneck.
But that's it, they learn how to use it better, and optimize their code and engines.

Project Cars.
- PlanetSide 2.

Infamous Second Son.

You can't really say the Jaguar might as well be an FX 8320, the 8320 is significantly faster no matter how you look at it, and with upcoming low level APIs etc for PCs it will only get better, but the Jaguars are also low power cores, it's not as if they were designed to be higher performance to topple Sandys or Piledrivers, since they're being used in notebooks, tablets and so on.
Says who? both versions look pretty good, but comparing a last gen game and a next gen game?

Sucker Punch also says, however, that the CPU has a bunch of advantages too. Such as the multithreaded optimization. Also, branching is MUCH better than the PS3 which was arguably one of the slowest parts of the PS3 architecture haha

If 1.84tflops can render photo-realistic images at native resolution and 60fps, what the bloody hell are we doing with sli 780ti@1300mhz? (~15tflops)

Short answer: Wasting money.
Long answer: You are feeding the developers on PC the fact that they can make an unoptimized game and you guys will buy it. Having two 780 Tis is pointless in my eyes as it is inefficient.

Edit : That being said, as a PS4 owner I always felt and will feel that this is a PS3.5 and not a PS4... But I am not complaining as I am enjoying the system more than I thought I would.

I agree. I am not expecting holographic imagery. I am expecting reasonable things from consoles 4x and 6x more powerful than the PS3.

Yea, if it was six Haswell cores @1.6ghz it'd be a very different story vs six Jaguar cores, though it'd still get smoked by 4670k/8320 not even remotely close

You forgot the 12 compute cores in the GPU.

the cpu and gpu are on the same die like haswell igpu or a 7850k, but they are still separate things and npt comparable. also, it's 18 compute units, each made up of 64 GCN cores.

Do you think the reason why it is only clocked at 1.75 GHz is because of heat?

well it's a chip design aimed at low power mobile devices. the jaguar chip with the highest clock speed on AM1 is the Athlon 5350 at 2.05ghz and that has half the cores of the versions in the PS4/XB1. I can't see heat being a big factor given the size of the console. XB1 especially is huge (with an equally huge fan) for the low power chipset inside.

Well what I meant actually was do you think that the reason why they can't use higher end parts is because they need to keep heat down because of the small size of the console? They could probably afford to tick the clock up about 500 MHz but they can't due to the potential heat in the console.

yea it all plays a part. there's also (most importantly) cost to consider as well. also, die space. jaguar are small chips and they were able to use most of the die are for the gpu. they can't possibly use higher end cpu parts in these consoles. they are working with AMD to get a low cost solution for cpu and graphics. any other current AMD architecture using more than 4 cores isn't going to work in this form factor due to heat and power consumption constraints. the IBM parts that were speculated to be in the WiiU and XB1 aren't on the good side of the power consumption spectrum either. 8 threads was probably more important to them than ipc or raw cpu speed. if so, they've achieved it as cheaply and comfortably as possible.

I think once they mentioned their specs then it opened them up to the ridicule of the PC crowd. If your specs are not as good as a gaming PC, then shut up! People who care that much about specs probably already have a gaming PC. If you are on the fence about getting a PS4, then for them to list their specs will make you hop down off that fence quicker than a jackrabbit going to... whatever jackrabbits go to. On the other hand, your specs will be revealed anyways so maybe I am not a good business person.

I was making a point where the ps4 is not limited cpu wise nor gpu wise. Optimization takes time and if such a low end product with 1/9th the SP than an PS4 with half the cores (granted clocked at 2.05ghz vs 1.6 ghz), I am very sure that 1080p @ 60fps is completely possible.

well, M$ and Sony can't stop shouting about hardware power even though the console with a runaway lead in specs has never won or been successful for that matter. Sony claimed they wouldn't make a big deal of it anymore, but after the XB1 specs got out they started again. it's like I said during the last generation. being that clock speeds and other specs were not going increase by nearly the same multiple (that's just impossible and unfeasible in the form factor and price range console have to stick to) they did in 2005/2006, they would have to find new ways to communicate the worth of their respective machines and drop the horsepower arms race. the companies drone on about power, the gaming news sites, devs and fans eat it up and regurgitate the stuff. it makes people who are slightly more informed on how hardware works go crazy. the cycle will never end.
