Samsung U28D590D Overview

Hey guys,
Bought this monitor a few days ago finally got it today. I have to say a ton of people have been saying oh TN is bad, oh 4k is bad. Well i think i can offer my insight.

I previously had a dell U2711. Thought it was a great monitor. Great viewing angles, great colors. (Glossy Catleap had better colors) All around a solid performer.

This Samsung blows it away.

I thought that since it was a TN that the viewing angles would be just as bad as the razer blade i had. I am pleasantly suprised that i was wrong. There is a bit of vertical color shift. Nothing that is possible to avoid with a TN. Side to side, there is nearly none. Even the vertical isn't that bad. More than tolerable i'd say coming from a IPS. If i get the color shift i'm sitting at an angle where i wouldn't want to view the monitor. The colors are also great. I don't get why people think its "washed" out. I honestly think the colors are more vibrant than my U2711. While they may not be as "accurate" they certainty "pop".

The resolution. Is it too much? It doesn't scale well blah blah blah. It doesn't need to scale unless you are sitting away from it like a tv. This is a monitor not a tv. I can say this extra clarity is justified. Is the clarity better than 120Hz, better viewing angles of an IPS? Well everyone has an opinion and i'm not looking to start a debate. But to be brief i do think 4k has a place and it is nice to have the higher resolution. It doesn't go unnoticed. Also games play fine on 4k on a GTX 780 Ti. On bf4 at 4k Ultra with no aa and no post. i get 55-60 FPS. Thats with everything else maxed. And thats also in a 64 player game. Everything else works flawlessly. Diablo 3, Guild Wars, League of legends etc.

Then the last downfall of this monitor was its stand. I had a yamakasi catleap, and that stand was more wabbily than this stand. While this stand doesn't have an adjustment on it, it sits fairly stable. Nothing i'd worry about tipping over like the catleap.

All in all 8.5/10 for the purchase. Totally worth it and games are totally playable on a single GTX 780 Ti.

Thanks for your mini-review. I saw a thread on Slickdeals today about this monitor (now available at Microcenter, Amazon, and Newegg for $599). I about jumped out of my chair at the prospect for 4K @ 60hz.

I have TN panels now and they are acceptable. I would need to see this in person to see for sure, but I'm pretty sure I could live with it.

I'd like more inputs... 1 HDMI and 1 Display port kind of suck. If they can have 1 HDMI why not 2 or 3?

A deal breaker for me is there is NO VESA mount at all for this guy... I have a desk mounted 2 monitor setup and will not go back to a monitor sitting on my desk. No VESA is NO BUENO for this guy. Feel free to take the back of yours apart and see if there is a way to "engineer" one.

But this is totally a step in the right direction. Man I was just about to jump into the 1440p game, glad I waited. I can hold out a little longer I guess (also considering I "only" have a GTX 770 I would either need to go SLI or up to a 780ti, additional cost factors).

It does have 2 HDMI.

And as for taking it apart. Ummmmm i'm not feeling it yet. Too precious still. I too would love a vesa mount. I would even spend like 100 on one for this monitor, but i'm not that adventurous yet.

i've been think about how to solve the no vesa mount problem. 3m make a double sided tape called 3m vhb which creates a permanent bond so i think a block of wood could be used to create a vesa mount and then be just stuck to the back.

How does the stand attach? Does it slide up into something in the back? One monitor I had didn't look to have mount holes, but once I removed the stand I found 2 holes that lined up ok (with some adapters and some southern engineering).

I'm with you on the permanent double sided tape though... not on a brand new $600 monitor.

Yes, it slides up into the neck of the monitor.

The Samsung U28D590D is an extremely attractive monitor.

I might buy it after reading this smile.gif
