How can I force different programs to play on separate devices - Page 2

It just seems I have thought of this need and heard the request for this feature WAY too often for there not to be a viable solution in technology to make this happen fluently. Home theater receivers have dual zones and can run two inputs on two different sets of speakers, why can our computers and sound cards not do this yet? It's bananas.

Set Windows to default on the USB headset, and set your music player to the speakers.

Browsers are tough cookies. Seeing as they use the Windows default sound.

if you have a spotify premimum account you can use a 3rd party (beta) program called Fidelify that is highly configurable as far as audio output (device / has ASIO and WASAPI support).

I use this to play my spotify on my speakers while having my games on my headphones

http://www.fidelify.net/

for streaming net radio or playing local music I generally use the previously mentioned winamp (w/ WASAPI plugin) to once again play music from speakers while game goes to headphones.

The problem is some/most games are in the same boat as the browser and only use the default device. If you want to separate to applications that can only use the default device then your problems begin.

I have never done it myself, but many people say that bitstreaming is possible with foobar.

However I did not read post #5, and therefore I did not know he needed spotify. I do not believe foobar plays well with spotify.

It's an interesting one, they actually say that the modifications Foobar makes are so small that there's no way you could possibly detect it - but still technically not a bit-stream, although they'll call it one.

Amusingly I was on the web-page of some high end playback system the other day and it had "bit perfect filters", that's a filter where the input isn't even filtered at all by the filters you line up and remains exactly the same - the joy of audiophile smile.gif

i wish (hint hint) some dev would make a extension or even new browser with audiofools..I mean audiophiles in mind with options for selecting audio devices and maybe even the ability to use ASIO or WASAPI.

however not sure if silverlight or flash content would remotely play nice with something like that??.. might be why nobody has?

Access to the ASIO SDK isn't free, last I saw... Not to mention there is no need to in have it for a browser in the first place.

I know absolutely zero about any kind of coding, so take this with a grain of salt, but it seems like it shouldn't be so hard to implement it into windows itself. Windows has the ability to use multi-threads, you can manage priority levels for each program you run, and can run things backwards compatible with XP, so why can't we have a check box for which audio device to use for the program we're using? I'm sure it's pretty complicated, but growing up around computers I've always seen that if there's a will, there's a way. Just surprised this little niche of technology isn't fluent yet, that's all.
