Whatcha think?

I did the same thing with my beige mod. Used the window mold to hide imperfections of my cuts, but its good to protect you from getting cut on the steel. You have a slightly different type then i did. I had the rounded rubber type. That looks flared. Still looks good tho. Im wondering if you plan to use it on the window, not just fans? Or was that just a test because you didnt have much?

Yah I ordered a sample months ago from PerformancePCs, it's nice stuff. Just ordered several feet to use around the fan holes, window hole, and sundry. Gonna test it out on the window and decide yea or nay.

48. More Goofing with Panels and Shields

Yesterday I did some more fiddling around with the foam panels. Again, this is really just a mockup. I'm going to redo all of these, and probably cover them with vinyl carbon-fiber-look material.

Let's see what we have to work with here. I started by cutting out two holes with a small hole saw, mostly because I was too lazy to pull the panel out, cut it, and put it back in again.

Not bad. Again, this is just a mockup. I'll be much gentler with the final product. biggrin.gif

And now to fish the motherboard and GPU wires through and see what we have:

No issues so far.

Now earlier, I said I was going to go for a "ramped" side on the PSU shield. Rather than cut a new piece, I just pulled the one I already cut and modded it a bit more. And again, this is just a mockup piece, so I'm fine if it doesn't have the finish/fit I expect of the final piece. First to cut a chamfer out at the bend point, so I can bend it nice and clean like:

And a bit of duct tape to keep it folded up:

Let's pop that to see how it looks:

Next we'll need a slit for the main mobo power cable:

I still need to cut slits to run the SATA and power cables to the drives. I also plan to cut an access hole in the back side of the 5.25" drive cage to route cables that way instead of trying to snake them past the fan.

I had another interesting idea. I happened to have this on hand:

It was some flexible foam padding that I had from a table kit I just assembled. Very bendy and I'm thinking it would work great as a grommet flap to mask the cable passthroughs.

Have you seen the NZXT S340?it has a cable shroud rather than grommets. If you could implement something like that it may look much cleaner.

That moulding around the fan cutout Looks cool, I'll have to remember that one for when I next do some modding wink.gif
I like the shape of that PSU shroud, but it Looks a bit short, I can still see some PSU in those pics confusedsmiley.png

I did this on my current rig using black plastic offcuts and it Looks great (to me at least! rolleyes.gif ), you can see it in the Pictures of The Endless Upgrade (see sig!), look at where the MB power cable goes through the MB tray. smile.gif

Verrryyy interesting. It's like a shield that hides the cabling slot. Thank you. ponders ponders

It was originally the length to do as a box. Making it an angle made it too short. The final version would cover the whole thing. thumb.gif

49. All Your Base Coat Are Belong To Us

Today I finally finished the base coat on the inside and outside of the side panels and top of the computer. Another big step toward completion!

Finished priming the other side of the side panels:
AppleMark

Painted the inside of the side panels black semigloss. This was the first coat. Looks a bit patchy, but you can see the finished color in the other photos below:

Waited for the black to dry and masking off the inside to prepare for painting the outside of the side panels and the top:
AppleMark

All masked off and ready to paint. My big concern was overspray on the interior side of the panels:
AppleMark

After the second basecoat:
AppleMark

So in case you're wondering what the heck I'm doing painting the exterior that merlot color, the idea is to mask off MOST of that, paint the exterior black, and then remove the mask to show a neat pattern. Originally I had thought to do a brighter blend of red, orange, and yellow as the base coat, but now I'm pretty much convinced that the merlot basecoat will look best.

Only downside so far is that putting the basecoat on has shown me how many imperfections I have in the bumpout side panel. mad.gif

I'll have to do some sanding and possibly a little more spotwork to get it where I want it I think.

I love the idea of the masking. It's what I planned to do when I was going to beige mod except I planned to do an Nvidia green under the black

That would look awesome.

Did a bit of sanding today on the bumpout panel. I'll upload photos in a bit when I get them off my phone. Overall, the satin paint is really showing the imperfections, and I'm not happy with that. I've found that the glazing putty, which is slightly thicker than toothpaste, is too thick to get a smooth spread on the smaller imperfections, and the filler primer wasn't thick enough to spread into the small pinholes and such.

There's apparently a thing called skim coat that is thinner than glazing putty that you can use, but it's speciality automotive stuff and quite expensive.

The alternative is lots of: Paint, Sand, Buff, Spot Fill, Paint, Sand, Buff, Spot Fill, repeat until satisfied. Argh. rolleyes.gif

In the meantime, here are a few goodies I ordered for the case:

SilverStone 120mm Fan Filter with Grill for the new top radiator hole.

5.25" PC Media Dashboard Front Panel All-in-1 with Card Reader, USB, Audio, SATA, eSATA, and IDE. This will provide the front panel jacks that the case is currently missing.

A larger 22mm button for the power switch. Having both the power and reset be the smaller 16mm version turned out to be a bit confusing to me.

Carbon fiber-look vinyl wrap. Going to use this for the internal shields/panels.

Also picked up some grommet hole/window edging. Both solid wall and slotted wall. Going to look at cleaning up the look of the holes with this.
