Graphics Card Drops from x16 to x8 (AMD = PCI-E 2.0) when cpu overclocked. - Page 2

Ya the 7970 is 3.0, and the AMD board supports only 2.0. But shockingly with my RAM (i'm guessing) I'm seeing up to 98% sometimes 100(!) GPU usage in ASUS GPU Tweak! Somehow the CPU is keeping up. I just (seriously while typing this) ran the render test in GPU-Z (the question mark next to the Bus Interface reading so you know what your not idle BUS is) I got 98% GPU usage at stock rig/cpu (no OC) and BUS was proper x16 2.0 - CPU isn't bottlenecking much.

OOh look i CAN put pictures smile.gif

Sorry didn't get the x8 2.0, hafta reset and OC, ask if u want it cuz u don't BELIEVE ME lol j/k

So if anyone wants to see my BIOS settings just ask and I'll resize them and post

maybe try overclocking from BIOS instead of using software I see you are using OC Genie Lite.

Can't hurt to try.

that GPUZ render test will tax the gpu, so you won't see much of the bottleneck. it is like playing BF3 SP. now, switch to MP, then the gpu will wait on the cpu.

This rig pwned BF3 MP maxed out at 1080p;) I think i used to go CPU heavy on that one and leave it at x8, if I saw 53fps on the apartments side of metro i would get pissed lol, usually 80-120 fps (Of course 64p srvrs pnly smile.gif

OC genie on this mobo (GD70) is done from within the BIOS, and i still need to identify the choke/bottleneck wtvr or just end up making the same mistake, can't really test one setting at a time and expect post/load/stability. I do play in the BIOS before and after OC genie, it just gave me good clocks and temps. If i can just find what to increase or decrease I'm solid. Imma put in pichers!

Dark, i own a phenom . . .

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/6290837

this is what happened in BF3 MP (look at the cpu usage). that's maxed out 1080 with the 7970 at stock . . .

here was BF4 maxed out again 1080

I can't see ur pics, but I assume all cpu cores were mostly maxed, if not, unpark your cores and watch your fps soar.

So I got x16 with the cpu overclocked to 3.9 by multiplier not ht link (fsb). AND the RAM at cl7 XMP timings. It's a bush league overclock, but it narrows the field.

i never tried unparking cores, though, i read about it. this phenom is a zosma that has 2 hidden cores that can be unlocked. only in some games like BF3 and BF4 that these extra cores are needed.

try this guide in oc'ing . . .

you got a good motherboard just make sure to keep the cores as cool as possible. the same with the mosfets.

Thanks for the link. How do I check mosfet temps?

As far as the zosma, unlocking the 2 extra cores is kind of a crap shoot i hear. Add that to the fact that the more cores you unlock the more heat/power etc. If you just Unpark your 4 cores (there's an easy program to toggle their position I use) I would be shocked is you weren't shocked at the performance increase, especially in games that aren't well optimized. Take Crysis 3 for example, my rig rarely dipped below 55fps unparked, and that was almost full ultra (yes MP lol). I would check your cooling solution efficacy before using more cores as I understand some people don't unlock all of their cores for heat reasons, like with 8 cores for example.
