Is a Z worth it?

Thread Starter
I like X-Fi's 3D and Crystalizer features a lot and I'd like something at least equal. Is a motherboard with a Realtek (and no software simulations from Creative) able to compete? Are there other solutions that beat Creative on 3D+Crystalizer on hardware?

Yeah. Get a real dac and amp and stop using software solutions.

If you are using software.....then something is wrong with your current audio solution.

I don't know what you mean by "compete." CMSS-3D and Crystalizer are processing the sound in a way that others don't. You won't find other hardware that sounds like that. If that's the sound you want, don't move away from it just because somebody like me says it's worse (I've tried and disliked both).

That said, it's not particularly clear what Crystalizer is doing I think. Either that or I never really investigated or followed through on reading on it. In the very least, it applies a simple smiley EQ (treble and bass bost)—I don't know about the rest or if it's really doing anything else. The smiley EQ could be reproduced in any number of different alternative fashions.

It also begs the question of whether you've tried alternatives to CMSS-3D. See this comparison, for example:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04yEtZJVpyY

The whole no-software BS is just elitist FUD, as far as I'm concerned. Use whatever works for you. It might not be what you're using now, but it's not necessarily what you're not using now.

Nevermind. Asking audiophiles for advice is dangerous. I already got nonsense off topic responses like "get an amp".

That's not even legit. I used CMSS-3D over its allegedly "CMSS-3D" and it changed it completely. Due to the nature of the effect this can not happen, it stays approximately the same (they probably used a very low setting that doesn't alter it much).

I agree, surround virtualization makes a huge difference IMHO.

Razer surround works on any hardware, and technically Dolby Headphone works on some realtek chipsets with modded drivers. You should try them both first hand before you buy a Z.

I like Razer Surround for games, and Dolby Headphone + Pro Logic for stereo movies. I've never tried SBX, but I hear it's pretty good.

I will agree the software is nice for the lowend audio equipment I have on my computer, buts its more than I need there. As for the Z, OP I can not say im completely happy with mine. I had trouble getting the drivers to work initially and it was causing system freezes in games. Although I like the card now ive got it straightened out. I cant say its worth the price over the xifi I had before. At least not with the lowend stuff a lot of people use. Maybe not with higher end, I dont know. Im no audiofile. But as far as gaming I was just as happy with the XIFI

Not off topic. You choose your words poorly.

Your words: Are there other solutions that beat Creative on 3D+Crystalizer on hardware?

Did you say are there other SOFTWARE solutions? No. You said are there other solutions. The answer to that question is yes, get something that doesn't sound like crap in the first place.

If you want to fiddle around with onboard audio, then get the razer surround sound program and an equalizer and go have fun.

Next time you want to avoid "dangerous audiophile advice", I recommend that you google your problem first and choose your words a bit better in the future.

Here, I will even get you started

Just so I follow, could you explain this again?

>>it changed it completely
What do the first and second "it"s refer to?

>>Due to the nature of the effect this can not happen
What's the "this" talking about?

>>it stays approximately the same (they probably used a very low setting that doesn't alter it much)
What do these "it"s refer to?

Are you saying that running through CMSS-3D twice changes things compared to only once? Or the opposite? My naive expectation would be that processing through CMSS-3D or something else twice would be significantly different than only once, which is what seems in line with the second sentence. But the third is about things staying approximately the same?

Wait... Is he trying to use CMSS-3D on a 2-channel audio track that has already been processed with CMSS-3D?

What CMSS-3D does is that it takes raw 6-channel sound and uses HRTF algorithm to downmix it into a "binaural" 2-channel sound.
You can't use CMSS-3D on 2-channel audio. The audio on the video is 2-channel sound (that has already been through the CMSS-3D like stated above).

Oh dramas... wait...

Okai! If you are gaming a lot! Z, CMSS-3D and virtualize sound is good especially for surround gaming knowing where your enemy location by sounds (First person shooters). Dolby Sound in some games such as TERA Online enhance the directional sounds from raid fights.

Software today works well unlike the past generations that I had so much troubles with bugs. Creative SB Z cards and software are solid for months (over a year i think).

If you are a movie goer, music craze. Hardware audio, DAC/AMP solutions. (Expensive solution $200+). You are pretty much fall into the category of owning a 4K TV with $2000 of surround sound system. But this is for personal computer studio grades.

Both don't MIX okai... now move along!
