Windows 8.1 X64 - Added harddrive to PC, How do i merge the partitions?

Thread Starter

As you can see in this pic, i want to format drive 2 and free up all the space on it... after that i want to merge them so that windows only shows one drive and the free space on that merged drive is 271 GB. I do not want to erase drive 1 or any data on it. So how do i do this without fudging things up?

If you are fine with deleting everything... just right-click on the boxes for the partitions in the lower half of the disk management window and choose delete. Then when the drive is completely empty, create a new partition that's the size of the whole drive.

What exactly do you want to merge? You can't merge anything into C: where Windows is. You can only merge partitions on drives that are only for data.

make the unallocated space a part of the drive on top. Basically add it to the free space of the drive on top

Yes, that's not possible.

What's possible is looking up how Intel's RAID works on your motherboard. You could then fuse your two drives into one using that. You will lose everything on the drives and will need to reinstall Windows. You will also need to look up how to install Windows with RAID so you really need to find a guide that shows everything from how to set up RAID to how to install Windows.

I've used raid0 before and i know how to do it... but i don't want to delete all my data again. What you're saying is that there is no way to combine the space from volume C to volume D? bummer dude frown.gif

You can't just add one drives extra storage to another drive like that. You will ether need to setup something like a JBOD configuration or do a real Raid setup.

maybe

Personally you need to get a SSD for your OS. Hard Drives are such a bottleneck in that area it is not even funny. You can pick up refurbished SSD's on Newegg for around 50 bucks if you are looking to keep cost down. IMO One of the biggest upgrades one can make to their PC is moving their OS from a HDD to a SSD.
