Low fps using R9 290X

Hey guys!

I recently purchased an MSI Gaming R9 290X as an upgrade to my aging 580gtx and so far im loving it.

I mainly play games on my pc, particularly LoL ans WoW with the occasional Bf4 thrown in there. Bf4 has seen a significant performance boost however the other 2 games not much.

Now my Bf4 runs ~70 fps using mantle and ultra. However in WoW i never can seem to get above 25 fps when its maxed and in league it starts at 140 and then during the game drops to 70-80.

My friends whom i play lol with tell me they have upwards of 100 fps and they are running older gpus than mine (pre 6 and r9 cards).

Could this be due to my cpu bottlenecking ? I have a thuban 1055t on an asus crosshair iv mobo, basicly the sig rig. 2 of my friends have a 2nd gen i5 and one has an 8350. I know two of them have 7770 gpus while im not sure what the one with one of the i5s has.

Any advise on how to proceed? The card seems fine. Not overheating or anything.

Yeah, LoL is very very very CPU-bound.

It's a computer!

Thanks for the quick reply smile.gif

Any suggestions on the cpu? Are the newer i5s and i7s worth the added cost with z97 or stay with the i7 4770k or i5 4650 with a z87

An R9 290X is completely wasted on WoW and LoL. I build a computer last year for my brother who only plays WoW and with a HD 7770 he was close to maxing the game out on 1080p.

WoW is all about single threaded performance. An i5 clocked as high as you can would give you the best performance. But still expect drops below 60 fps in very crowded areas. The game just can't handle it when there are 50+ other players around you.

If WoW runs fine then LoL will run fine too, runs on pretty much anything.

even my i7 had to be oc'ed with just a 7950. now, with the 290, the only time I can leave it at stock is when using mantle in BF4MP.

as others mentioned, wow is cpu limited.
