No! But we don't ever want to be! We give away a LOT of stuff over the course of the year and these funds help us do that :)

I just want to post my 2 cents, primarily as a previous user and now lurker.

Since the move from vBulletin vs Hubbler, I have been logged out when I browse. I like reading news on OCN nowadays, but that is really just it, the layout since the move has never been appealing to me and is overall more detracting from content. It just feels less engaging and more...flashy? On this page for example, recent reviews is added, which...is not relevant to reading this post at all and since OCN doesn't support responsive design, It takes up I would say...1/6th of my page, 3/6 being the gray bars on the sides.

That being said, with me logged out, every post has an ad if you are a guest without ad block. In addition, I think on two separate occasions after formatting, I load up OCN, and visit the Qnix section to install the driver, install Kaspersky and I find malware on my system. That does not give confidence at all in your ad controls and I am not going open my system to being compromised so you can make money from my 1 impression. I do not visit any sites apart from drivers, and I have never had a problem unless I browse OCN. In addition, if I see a pop over ad on the content, I am guaranteed to get off your site. I have seen these on a few occasions (once again rare), and there have been threads about this as well.

As much as i would like to support the community, its becoming less about the content and more about making profit, which is fine, but OCN needs to explore other areas of revenue, not just forcing ads down your throat, which is what it is on guest view. Especially if you have nothing in place for reviewing these ads to begin with.

I can address a few things:

  1. Style / format preferences are very subjective as you know. I wish we could please everyone :sad-smile I do agree we need a redesign and one will be done. I am working with Huddler on it.
  2. I honestly don't believe our ads are causing malware issues on Computers. I run Kaspersky as well and have never received any malware issues from OCN. I am on daily and I browse from both US and CAN IPs.
  3. By no means has the site moved to a more profit-driven motive. I promise you this. Revenue has grown with the site growing. Prizing has increased in the same way.

It bothers me that you have this perception of us now. It does not bother me that you have this opinion - it bothers me that we left you with that feeling

@Limes @admin : You guys might like the style but I do, a lot of us do... The recent reviews in kinder pointless on this page, but everything else. I like coming on to the homepage and see the news section first, not many websites do that. I like the way things are.

2. I have had no issue with ads even when I'm at University

3. The ads aint the much, its not that annoying compared to other websites. I have not even had a pop up, but it is best to have ads that are related to the site.

One idea - have you tried turning off the right hand column? This option is available for logged in users. Please let me know :) I am here to help make your experience as good as it can be :D

Did not know about that option, thank you very much! Personally I love the Huddler layout/system the way it is, I can probably adapt, but back before I actually joined OCN when it was still vBulletin I was unwilling to join because it was vBulletin (I can't stand the layout of any site with them). As for the ads, I do use AdBlock because "extras" tend to annoy me, thus I keep it on. The ads I used to see weren't all computer related, I saw one when I reinstalled Windows last week (before I put AdBlock back on) that was advertising something about an oil change for your car. I saw that ad and immediately put AdBlock back on.

EDIT: That being said, I will whitelist OCN for a trial week and see if the ads really do still bother me.

EDIT #2: I see an Acura ad.

I find all of OCN's ads non-intrusive. Sometimes I accidentally click on one, but that's my fault. tongue.gif

It's easier for all of us to 'suffer' some non-intrusive ads so we can all continue to enjoy this site. I'm sure it has brought people more fun, information, and proper help than the frustration of a few banner ads that are actually related to PCs and everything. I actually bought something because an ad put it in my mind. wink.gif

It looks like that ad is targeting you and not the content of the site. That will happen from time to time. As we secure more direct advertisers, you will notice less of those "generic" ads.

By keeping OCN whitelisted, you help support the site - whether it's a car ad or a computer ad. We are doing our best to ensure we increase the amount of computer ads by selling more direct advertising rather than resorting to network advertising when no direct ad is found.
