How does block design impact performance on different platforms?

So I had been reading through Moonman's cpu waterblock roundup over on xtremesystems and noticed that the koolance 380i appears to perform much better on 2011 than it does on 1150/1155. I've also noticed that reviews of the Silverstone TD02 show that it is in a similar situation, where it performs better on 2011 than it does on 115x (according to frostytech and bit-tech). I was wondering if people thought these were flukes (I'm inclined to say no), and if not, what would be the driving factor behind the improved 2011 performance?

Well for one thing, I know that the EK blocks come with different "jet plates" for different platforms.

I think it has something to do with the CPU die shape and placement. Which would explain the performance difference with the 380i mounted with the ports horizontal vs vertical. Other than that, I'm not really sure what all the different jet plates are for since it's been shown that one jet plate (I think it's 3 for Supremacy and 6 for my old Supreme HF, I can't remember for sure) has the best performance.

Two main things.

TIM mechanical contact is affected by how aggressive the base is bowed. More aggressive bowing leaves a more concentrated by narrow optimal contact and increases pressure at the center. More aggressive bowing is generally going to be more optimized for smaller cores with a more concentrated heat distribution 1155 etc. 2011 also need bowing but you want a larger contact patch area so generally less bowing than 1155.

copper base cooling area. Similar to above 2011 or cores with a larger die generally favor blocks that have larger active cooling areas in the base where 1155 and smaller cores don't benefit much from those pins and fins cooling larger areas.

To make it even more cloudy, not all processors have an equally flat IHS. Some are nice and flat while others can be convex or concaved. These differences will make them favor bowing differently depending on the individual processor. A concaved IHS will strongly favor highly bowed bases etc..

This is why you should never hang your hat on one review or test. TIM mechanical contact varies depending on cpu sample a LOT and typically more than the performance differences between current gen blocks.

Thanks a lot for explaining that to me. I was having a discussion with some people about the apparent bizarre performance of the TD02 and how it performs incredibly well on 2011 but nothing special on 115x and was trying to get to the bottom of the reasoning.

Absolutely right. As a perfect example of the above. Strens testing of the same chip and blocks gave the 380i a slight lead

Neither method can be faulted. Its just the diffences between modern blocks fall well into the margin of error and inconsistency. It just really isn't worth worrying about. The Tim used can make a larger difference.
Which is all a good thing. We are free to make choices based on cost or aesthetics or support, things we actually have to live with long term.
