Trouble finding heatsink for AM3

Thread Starter
I am building my dad a PC so he can surf the net in his room. I have an FX 6300 CPU but I do not like AMD's included heatsinks and fans. They sound horrible. My favorite coolers that are very quiet are the Cooler Master Hypers. Problem is, I do not know if the heatsink will fit in the case. I can't figure out how to measure the width when taking into account the motherboard being in there and another fan being on the side. I am putting an intake fan on the side. So I guess I need a low profile heatsink that fits AM3.

This is the motherboard he has: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131795

As you can see the motherboard's heatsinks and RAM slots might get in the way of something. If the only thing that will work is a tower style heatsink then I will remove the side fan.

Here is the case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147166

Any suggestions? It needs to be around $25 or so unless you know of a good reason to spend more.

Add about 10 mm for the CPU socket and motherboard standoffs and 25mm for the thickness of the side panel fan. Your case is 185mm wide so that cuts you down to about 150mm "if" the side panel fan is directly or partially over the CPU area (are you going to use both side fan spots or only the one over the GPU?). A rifle style cooler that would fit that for sure would be the Thermalright True Spirit 120.

http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?p=FAN-TS120&c=fr&pid=4362915f584611a06eb5f8500a7482269436255ce8cf79b4be3739c27ba7d39d&gclid=CjkKEQjw7tabBRCc0YvZ0-PigM4BEiQA8quBqeXv_XIqmRLb0gZkmQnyXI7lXAHv8RnMK0vGEj5hO-bw_wcB

Its the shortest 120mm cooler, but performs about like a Hyper 212+. Unfortunately its a good deal more especially with shipping figured in (pushing $40 total). Other than that you'll probably need a "top down" style cooler (most any would fit the bill for you clearance wise), but they're generally above your price limit as well.

If you don't have a fan in that top side panel spot you could probably use most any 120mm rifle style cooler. Maybe just put one over the GPU?

CPU to motherboard is 8mm, motherboard is 2-2.2mm. and standoffs are 6.5mm. wink.gif
Hyper 212 Evo fits in so you have about 150mm CPU clearance.

Cooler Master Hyper T4 are $27.99

Maybe find a good used cooler?

Just ordered it because you said it is fine. If it doesn't work, I want blood. No j/k it's not a big deal if it doesn't work, but thanks for the help anyways and +rep.

nope, I clearly remember you saying it will 100% work. Even though that is not what you actually said, I remember it that way. So if this doesn't work I am throwing all of the perfectly usable components in the trash.

As long as it's in my trash. thumb.gif

And let me know you've done it so I can get it before it's collected.

We both agree that he has about 150mm clearance. How can a 159mm cooler like the 212 Evo fit? If he has both side fan spots filled it likely won't. Oh well, I said my peace in the first reply (that apparently it wasn't what the OP wanted to hear). Good luck.
