AMD Budget Challenge - Update 5/27

Thread Starter
Hello,

I have a pretty high end system that I built a long time ago but before all I was looking at was performance without much of a budget. I am having a bit of difficulty with my latest build which is for my father who wants to replace an old computer that broke. If you could take a look at the parts I have come up with so far and provide any alternatives or better value options that would be amazing. The budget is around $350-$450 but lower is definitely better if possible without sacrificing too much.

The details you need to know:

1) All this system will be used for is web browsing, emails and the odd video or program application such as Word.
2) Previous System: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5006279

Proposed Builds

#1 - Integrated Graphics - $425.35

http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/user/mikenicoll87/saved/4HYr

#2 - External Graphics - $594.71

http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/user/mikenicoll87/saved/4HXK

Questions:

1) Is it worth having him just go to best buy or buy one online prebuilt? Will it cost more or less than building it myself?

2) For his purpose is it necessary to have an external GPU? He has had onboard for years and it seemed to suit him fine. It seemed much more expensive to get a motherboard without internal graphics and then adding an additional $100~ for a GPU

Thanks so much !

1) Building a computer is fun experience, you are in control
2) Onboard gpu will be fine for that purpose, but will better a graphic card.

Have a look at the following and see what you think.....

AMD Athlon 5350DT $59.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113364

ASUS AM1-I Motherboard $54.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132098

Patriot Viper 3 4GB $39.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220806

COOLER MASTER N Series NSE-200-KKN1 $44.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119274

The PSU you listed would be fine,

not including the PSU or an OS this would run $204.96

Hello,

Thanks for the input guys. Wouldn't I need to add graphics to that cost kyfire? I also changed the first 2 links to pcpartpicker to make it easier to identify items.

nope the Athlon 5350DT is an APU, graphics and CPU on the same chip. It's a nice running platform for the cost. and more than enough for your father's needs.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't know APUs existed so that opens up some more options. That case is beautiful as well

Do all processors have onchip graphics? What about the FX-6300 I picked out earlier because the only reason I added that Motherboard was for the onboard graphics.

-Mike

no, pnly APUs have both CPU and GPU on the same chip. The AMD Athlon 5350DT is their lastest chip released back in Jan. Here's a review of it and the motherboard I suggested http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Reviews/amd_athlon_5350_asus_am1ia/
