Limit to Bottleneck a Processor

Thread Starter
Hi i have a pretty old computer that was given to me and i was looking to upgrade the GPU in it, but i am not good by any means of determining what will bottleneck a processor or what GPU is compatible with what. So I thought id come here and ask if anyone could help me out.

Processor - Core 2 Quad 2.5gHz
Motherboard - Asus P5Q

Im aware these are pretty ancient but i just wanted to see if it was even possible to upgrade.

So basically what im asking, What is the best card i can put in this computer without capping the processor.

Thanks!

core 2 quad isn't to shabby. I imagine it's 4gb/8gb of ddr2 5300?
theres no simple answer, it depends on the application, some games are more cpu dependent like starcraft 2, some are all about the gpu like crysis.

generally speaking you'll see performance gains using a gtx 760 vs a gtx 780ti with that rig, but the cpu may reduce those gains.

with that rig you could easily overclock your cpu to 3.0ghz on stock volts and air cooling if 2.5hz is your stock frequency.

Also you want 8gb of ram. besides that I'd put a gtx 760 in there.

If you dont know which PSU model it is then take a picture, if its something like one of the old GX units then you do not want that in your PC.
