Old but unused stock heatsink - thermal paste?

Thread Starter
I have an old stock LGA1156 heatsink I was thinking of using on a LGA1155 build. It has never been opened. Now with a normal stock heatsink I'd just pop it on but it must be at least 5 years old - is the stock preapplied TIM still ok?

At that age, I'd replace it.

Intel stock coolers are not sealed and the TIM has been exposed to air for five years. From a chemical perspective there is little in TIMs that would be subject to oxidation. However, it is possible that it 'might' have dried out and you would not get the desired amount of spreading when you boot up and the CPU temperature rises. I suspect that it's still good to go but if you want to be on the safe side remove it with some isopropyl alcohol (91% is available at almost all pharmacies and is just fine for this purpose). Use the TIM of your choice when mounting it the cooler.

It should still be okay, but it's always better to just replace the stock thermal paste. In case you don't have any spare paste, then I would just use the stock paste.
