Old man with new parts.

My i7-860 is five years old,it is in a Lain Li PCA70 case and on a Asus Maximus III Formula motherboard. It served me well, it recently helped me copy a mountain of cds plus 7000 movies on to my NAS in mp4 format. At the start of the year the talk was x99 chipsets and HEDT by the beginning of 2H 2014 and my ambition was to get one of those 8 core/16 thread $1000 bad-boy and rip a few blu-rays.

With my existing set up it can take a while to handbrake a whole season of Downton Abby in Blu-Ray to my NAS. In anticipation of my $1000 CPU I made some investments a few months ago:

PS - EVGA SuperNOVA 1300
Case - Cooler Master Cosmos II
Cooling - Cooler Master Nepton 280L
OS - Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro Full Version - Classic Shell
boot drive - SAMSUNG 840 EVO 1TB
work drive - (1) WD green 3TB
NAS BU - (4) WD green 4TB
system BU -(1) WD green 2TB

I back up my movies to my workstation hard disk, and I back up my OS, apps and data to a local 2TB hard drive. I have a 3rd PC that I will be retiring and stealing a few parts from. The movies stored on the NAS are backed up to both PCs, so with the original DVDs I have 4 copies. That is why I like 4TB hard drives so much.

re-use from BU PC
DVD -(2) ASUS DRW-24b1st
Blu-Ray -ASUS Blue-ray BW-12b1ST
mouse- Razer DeathAdder 2013
Key - Microsoft SIDEWINDER X4 Keyboard
Display - Evga 680 GTX
Display- Dell 3007WFP-HC 30-Inch
Display- 26" Samsung 1920x1200

I did have my heart set on a Broadwell CPU first expected first late 2013, then early 2014 then July 2014 then September now Christmas for sure- maybe? I spent only $184 for 16GB of DDR3 system memory. I don't know how much 16GB of quick DDR4 will cost two weeks before Christmas. Intel will not retail Broadwell until they get it right, (I assume) I don't think Intel knows when that will be.

So today I ordered my core components (Devil's Canyon)

CPU - i7-4790k - ships 6/25/14
Memory- G.Skill TridentX (4x4GB) 2400 low Lantancy ~10
MB - ASUS Z97 Deluxe

Currently I run 2 displays a 30" Dell and a 28" Samsung. in a few months I may spring for a Nvida Maxwell card. I don't think the 780ti are that much faster than my 680 gtx to invest in a 780 generation card. I don't know what to do for new displays, I like 4k but don't have the money. Newegg has open box Dell U3014 displays for $825 but two 30" displays put one's cross-hairs on the display frame and three 30" require a bit of cash and desk I don't want to give up. I may just wait for 4k to get more reasonable.

When the CPU shows up after 6/25 I'll get to work. I should have the PC together in a few hours, nothing too fancy to look at but it will be tuned to the nth degree. I am new to windows 8.x so I expect a week to get the shell working and looking like Vista/win 7 will all my apps installed. I might wish my PC could more impressive to photograph but it will be a work PC for me.

Instead of cooling down a 140w 8 core monster I'll be using a thick Nepton 280 to cool a 88w Devil's canyon. I know that. It should work anyway. I read a lot about the ASUS z97 Deluxe and liked what I read. I hope it does not disappoint and I hope to OC enough for the thing to get out of it's own way. One reason I picked the z97 Deluxe is because I will use all 10 of those SATA ports starting from day one.

We shall see.

Thank you for listening.

As far as displays I do believe Asus and Samsung both have some 5-600 dollar 4k monitors. If I come up with the models I'll post em for you.
You going with an aio for the cpu or a custom loop?

I am running a coolmaster Nepton 280L which I intended to use on a 6/8 core CPU, so I am over cooling in that way.

I'll have $2,800 in new parts and another $2,000 in used parts - starting with about $1,500 in used displays. One display is a 30" 3007 Dell which is 7 years old, 2560x1600 which shows no signs of dying.

I am a display junkie, but I can't waste a 30" 2560x1600 just because it has no display-port.

What I have now is OK for now, the new cheap ASUS 4k display does not impress me. It is not better than what I have now.

I see newegg had open box 3014 dell displays for $850, I wish I had the money for 3.

I do not know what i would need 4k display for. The small print on 2560x1600 can be way to small for my old eyes.
