Is the tape worth it?

Yes, still tracks same speeds as without and gains about half to one cd lower lod. Not much but right balance for me, specially with no drawbacks. At the height it would track "wobbly" without tape it stops tracking with.

Haha, I briefly considered doing this just to see how low I could take it, decided it wasn't worth making it look ridiculous for a few grams.

3D printers could be a neat method of creating custom shells for specific internals.

The hardcore-approach would be using shapeable hardened foam as the top shell. Could be achieved with styrofoam as well I suppose. Although getting proper switch actuation and scroll wheel implementation could be a pain.
