ECC works on AM1

Thread Starter
I decided to try ECC on AM1 platform, as supposedly it will work ECC but need bios support.

Also rumor asus has ECC support.

Well, sorry it not work on any of the Asus MB

Works! On Am1m-a

Perhaps there may be future bios for other asus boards, but this seems the only ecc one so far.

:-(

The memory controller on AM1 platforms is a little bit "scaled down".
I wouldn't figure it for an ECC build anyway. Also, there are software options that emulate ECC if you really need it so bad...

Asus AM1M-A does support ECC memory. I have installed 16GB of micron unbuffered ECC ram. Even though the bios does not show ECC memory options, ecc is supported. I verified it with memtest86 pro and enabled ecc error injection, which it corrected/passed.thumb.gif

Cheers!

Please post the confirmation screens! This is good news if you can confirm this.

The updated ASUS AM1M-A manual

AM1M-A specifications summary

Supports CPU up to 4 cores

Refer to
www.asus.com
for the AMD
®
APU support list.
Chipset
Built-in AMD
®
Sempron Series and Athlon Series APUs
Memory
2 x 240-pin DIMM slots support maximum 32GB* unbuffered ECC DDR3
1866 (O.C.)/1600/1333 MHz memory modules

So ECC is supported and is official

Just wanted to share,

Someone called Lem posted that he's using : Kingston DDR3-1600 ECC (KVR16LE11/8I) on Asus AM1M-A.

QUOTE from his post :
Quote:
Memtest seems to allow ECC to be forced on, and it works. Linux (as in Ubuntu 14.04.1, kernel 3.13) doesn't seem to want to load the amd64_edac_mod module however.

In case anyone was interested:

root@# dmidecode --type memory
# dmidecode 2.12
# SMBIOS entry point at 0x000f04c0
SMBIOS 2.7 present.

Handle 0x002A, DMI type 16, 23 bytes
Physical Memory Array
Location: System Board Or Motherboard
Use: System Memory
Error Correction Type: Multi-bit ECC
Maximum Capacity: 8 GB
Error Information Handle: Not Provided
Number Of Devices: 2

So I ordered the same stick and a ASRock AM1B-ITX (4 sata port) to try out.
I'll try to give news if it works.

EDIT: As of 2014-8-13, ASRock AM1B-ITX with latest bios. ECC is not supported. Not on Memtest86 or in linux.
trying to force it with : modprobe amd64_edac_mod -v ecc_enable_override=1
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'amd64_edac_mod': No such device

dmidecode --type memory
# dmidecode 2.12
SMBIOS 2.8 present.

Handle 0x000F, DMI type 16, 23 bytes
Physical Memory Array
Location: System Board Or Motherboard
Use: System Memory
Error Correction Type: None

END EDIT

Thanks for your info, because info of ECC on AM1 is sparse.

AM1 and ECC is a killer combination for low power NAS and micro cloud computing. If it works, it could hit hard on the atom server market ! Just missing dual lane memory access.

It seems this motherboard (mATX AM1M-A) has a little brother, the mITX AM1I-A, which was released at the same time. Even though the manual says it only supports non-ecc unbuffered RAM, that's what the AM1M-A manual said before revision.

Has anyone tested out the AM1I-A with ECC unbuffered ram to confirm if it works or not? This would be a sweet ITX consumer grade board for the home server/lab if it turns out to support ECC!

Hi folks,
I can confirm that ECC seems to work with my Asus AM1M-A board, Athlon 5350 and crucial CT102472BD160B. thumb.gif

AM1B-ITX only has one bios, so no idea what you mean.
