$2,000+ battlestation for work, uni and some gaming

post #1 of 20

Hello hello, mobile people. smile.gif

So, it's been a while since I've wanted a computer that I can bring along with me everywhere, and my open bench tray with three displays is definitely not suitable for this.
I want to go study abroad for my Magister's, so this laptop will become my battlestation over there.

Now, when I build this, I want it to last..and last......and last, because I doubt I'll buy anything newer in the next 5-6 years, probably even more - I want to stick to the Desktop side of things. Having the possibility to upgrade (MXM GPUs) would be greatly appreciated though.

Alright, let's do this.

What is your maximum budget?
~$2,250 (you'll have to try really hard to make me shell out more)

What country are you in?

Bulgaria, but in 1 month my sister is coming back home from the US so I can skip the shipping and customs taxes if ordering from there.

What will be the uses of this laptop?
Work (implying virtualisation and/or lots of virtual sessions, in other words, at least 16GB RAM and a quad-core with HT);
Everyday carry for general use in the university;
Gaming when plugged, but I don't care for AAA titles

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
Totally not.

What screen size do you require?
17''+ matte

What screen resolution do you require?
1080p+, 120Hz will be fantastic if possible, of course (because I play such titles and really like the smoothness, see below)

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
New/refurb/recertified is okay

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)
2.5hrs+

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?
WildStar, Diablo III, upcoming Dragon Age and Witcher. Rest of the titles are very lightweight (Valve engine mostly)

What operating system do you need? (if any)
Would rather not have any OS - I have Dreamspark, and Linux is free.

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
I don't care about looks as long as the cooling is adequate, but generally industrial design appeals to me while bling definitely does not.

How much hard drive space do you need?
I will procure my own hard drives, but I need 3 slots:
1 SSD;
2 HDDs;
I do not need an optical drive, so that can become a caddy.

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
1xUSB2.0 port would be very nice to have.
A minimum of 4 USB ports total.

Is there anything else we need to know?
I would like your general advice here, because
I am thinking of getting an NVidia 870M but that is a Kepler unit, and Maxwell will come in about half an year - would it be worth it to wait, considering the power draw of Maxwell? OTOH I'll have to pay customs and shipping if ordering later, and from the Sager site it seems like shipping alone won't be less than $300.

Here's two configurations that I came up with (mind you, no storage included) (Click to show)

Do note that I will try to contact them before ordering and haggle to get rid of the OS and obligatory hard-drive for a lower price, haha. tongue.gif

Have you taken a look at what clevo offers? They are typically very modular in that you can swap the CPU and GPU.

The other thing is they are typically very minimalistic in their design, very plain looking, which may appeal to you more than the Alienware variant mentioned above

There is no point in getting an 880m

I would get some 870m's far before ever considering 880m

I second TheReceiver on this. The 870m is well fast enough for any game. The price jump to the 880m is ludicrous for the meagerly performance increases you'll see.

Well more often than not you can get SLI 870m's for less than the jump to 880m. crazy logic going on here lol

Sorry guys, I've been idle for a bit - I broke my shoulder recently.

Thanks everyone for the input!

And indeed it is true that I'd rather have 870 (perhaps SLI) - but what grabbed me was the 120Hz display, which is not available with 870(s). mad.gif
I also don't see the point in the memory buffer of the 880 - to me that's just retarded. But, to refrain from using more harsh words, I'll end it with this.

@ganzosrevenge, I don't really need dual SSDs, I'm not going to RAID them. And I'm going to need a bit more capacity, so that's why I chose one SSD with a mechanical RAID 0.
Yeah, I'd love 2x1TB SSDs, but I don't expect a birthday gift from a millionaire. rolleyes.gif

I'd like to avoid Alienwares because I find their configuration options very limited, and the extra in price is unjustified IMO.

Now I'm going to take a look at Clevo, they might be an option.

On a side note, I contacted Sager and no OS was an option, saving me almost a hundred bucks. Then again, a hard-drive is a must, but the 7200rpm is a nice drive.

The 2 notebook configurations you have in the original post are Clevo laptops. Sager, Eurocom, Malibal, Mythlogic, etc... all use Clevo laptops as the base. They sell the barebone chassis to these vendors who install the parts and resell the laptop. I think the only place I've seen a straight clevo for sale is on RJtech.com. It is the same with a lot of vendors and MSI barebones you can buy the MSI version of the notebook, or a generic version that gets configured and assembled by other sellers.
