[VC] AMD Tonga arrives in August, replaces Tahiti PRO - Page 5

Tonga is replacing Hawaii Pro's W8100 for the low TDP markets; Mobile and Workstation. While in the desktop markets that are okay with high TDPs; R9 xxx(X) it could replace Hawaii all together.

Maui is going for R9 295X2 performance.

Ameythst XT / Tonga XT GL = Hawaii Pro GL
Tonga XT / Tonga Pro > Hawaii XT / Hawaii Pro

It's hard to believe that R9-280 will be replaced as it just hit the market but it is more vender spec then AMD ref design.. but Tahiti is still a good gpu and I guess AMD is just moving it down the line to make room for something else on the high side as Hawaii will also step back..

The 280 is not new at all it is just a rebadged 7950 which has been on the market since 2012. That is a heck of a long time. That was the year I graduated from school. And here we are two years down the line with a re-badged part still. This is why I have kept these ageing BART's chips. Because I usually upgrade every two gens. And the 280 is only a gen behind Barts so yeah. Looking forward to some 270X replacements! thumb.gif

Hmm I wonder why they went with 256-bit. NVidia regretted that with GK104, which was undoubtedly a weaker chip than Tahiti, and now they basically chop the memory advantage that Tahiti had over the GK104 off of a power optimized chip.

Guess I'll have to wait until benches to see how much it affects the final product.

All products will have 128-bit to 256-bit interfaces while also having N-amount of HBM 1024-bit interfaces.

APUs will use DDR3 or DDR4 with HBM.
GPUs will use GDDR5 or GDDR5M with HBM.

HBM, HBM everywhere.

Nvidia definitely did not regret the 256bit bus on GK104.

Yes the chip might be a bit slower than Tahiti on desktops (and btw this only really became the case 6 months after launch with the 12.11 drivers) but overall it just completely destroyed tahiti when it comes to adoption. It got all the high end laptop design wins, it scaled down better as cut down SKUs, it was smaller, required less complex PCBs, less powerful VRM designs etc. It was easier to profit from, it fit more market segments and it sold more.

It was a huge commercial win. An almost perfectly executed mid-range Nvidia die.

While I agree that the initial move was a great win for Nvidia, I feel like the 600 series on the whole hurt their reputation as a company to some folks. They spoon fed us the GK110 is made for teh computes because they couldn't get the yields good enough for it to make sense for consumer products during that series. I dunno, I just felt cheated when I bought into the 600 series at launch and I don't think I'll get another nvidia card until I'm sure it's a full die.

Carizzo with hbm and l3? If theres slightly better performance from ex and even lower tdp that will kill off dgpus under £100...
