I don't think it makes alot of difference if you buy ATI or NVIDIA, most of the time it's just "silicon lottery" lol.

That aside, I think the 280x Toxic's product line from Sapphire in particular is actually flawed yeah. Some other 280x models are actually good, they are still just rebranded 7870's though.

Sapphire r9 280x the best door stopper I've bought in a while. Thx. Sapph.

It's actually not that uncommon and problematic of overclocked cards. It's a downside to how they bin the cards. In testing they may have had a batch of cards that were closer together but in retail production the variation is greater than the pool they had during validation. The end result is that you will have some cards that don't quite meet the specs needed to run the settings they settled on. For ex. a couple generations ago I had a pair of MSI 580 OC cards that could not even run at the stock voltage. MSI had binned the voltage too low for my pair of cards ironically. So much for buying overclocked retail cards right? I had to give the voltage a bump. That's just the way things are, but in my case I kept them because I got them for 360ea when 580s were still north of 500ea. Too bad you rma'd though, it would have been easy to just return it till you got one that passed muster.

I fixed my artifacting issue on my r9 280x TOXIC by a BIOS update.

I reached out to Sapphire and after providing my current BIOS number and board P/N. They provided BIOS 015.045 and a tool to flash it. Haven't had artifacts since (around month since time of posting).
