Sandbox thread for discussing boards that can overlock the G3258 processor without the need of the Z97 or Z87 chipsets.

I''m talking about H97 chipset only 'coz i love new board with new features. Actually all other chipset from Asus and most if not all from Asrock and partial MSI board (such as B85 G43 Gaming) can overclock G3258 too.

Here are some models I have been able to find info on:
ASRock H81M-HDS (Micro ATX): OC to 4.5 Ghz. See post #19.
ASRock H81M-ITX/Wifi (Mini-ITX) : See page 61 of the owners manual published May 2014: http://download.asrock.com/manual/H81M-ITXWiFi.pdf)
ASRock H81 Pro BTC (ATX): See post #42
ASRock Fatal1ty B85 Killer (ATX) : Several Newegg reviewers claim Non-Z overclocking was working back in March 2014. Also see forum review from January 2014 in post #38
ASRock H97M Pro4 (Micro-ATX) : See page 70 page of the following owners manual published April 2014 under "4.3 OC Tweaker Screen" for Non-Z overclock--> ftp://66.226.78.21/manual/H97M%20Pro4.pdf )
ASRock Fatal1ty H97 Performance (ATX) :See review dated June 30th, 2014--> http://www.pcgameware.co.uk/reviews/...rboard-review/ )
Gigabyte H81M-DS2V (Micro-ATX): OC to 4.39 GHz.) See post #26.)
GIGABYTE GA-B85N Phoenix-WIFI (Mini-ITX) :Non-Z overclock found in owner's manual, see post #39.
Gigabyte GA-B85M-DS3H (Micro-ATX) : Reported to Non-Z OC Pentium 3258 to 4.3 Ghz, see post #31 and 4.0 Ghz post #14)
Gigabyte GA-H97M-HD3 (Micro-ATX): See post #46
MSI B85-G43 gaming (ATX) :See post #16, OC was 4.5 Ghz. There is also a video from 2013 in post #6. Glad to see Non-Z overclocking still working on that board in 2014)
Also reported on post 26 of previous post's URL.
I think most people are alright with it because they can usually hit 4.2 to 4.3 GHz at 1.2v, and because newegg is having some sweet combo deals where the mobo is practically free.
Very valuable information. Thank you.Originally Posted by Sin0822
yes GBT supports OCing it on non Z series boards, but they aren't about to make an announcement, most of their sales come from the lower chipset series, unlike asus where a lot of their sales come from Z chipsets. It just has to do what what markets each company is dominant in, and also to what extent they want to piss off Intel, b/ Z chipset is MUCH more expensive to mobo makers than H or B or Q. I would say that the cost of all the hardware on a Z board other than the chipset might not reach the price of the chipset alone (aka chipset price of Z board is more than half the cost of all the hardware on the board) especially if the board is on the cheaper spectrum. On a H series board this isn't true as often, its much cheaper to build a board with a H series chipset than Z, even though the features of the chipset aren't all that different (same general things supported, but of course Z is usually more).
The GA-B85-HD3 can oc with the g3258. The latest bios is from June 27, so that one should be able to work from July 9 ^. I'm pretty sure the vcore only goes up to 1.2v, but I haven't opened my g85-hd3 so I can't confirm.Originally Posted by Condition

incidentally, voltage doesn't seem to be limited on this motherboard

Awesome stuff. I give it a month tops before Intel brings down the banhammer. Luckily I have all the BIOS' saved.
Here's a specific list of OC enabled MoBo's:
I'm looking for a mobo to go with one of these, I can't find that msi pc mate board for less than $70, newegg has it at $69.99 after $10 mail in rebate and it has terrible reviews.Originally Posted by AlphaC

Supposedly GIGABYTE GA-H81-D3 is able to hit 1.2V http://extremespec.net/gigabyte-ga-h81-d3-motherboard-review-design-testing-performance/2/
I suspect the GIGABYTE GA-H81.Amp-UP (which is about $70 but has superior audio) should also top out at 1.2V

Biostar's Hi-Fi H81S2 looks like it could be a competitor @ $60 if you're looking at ATX boards: http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=658#ov
At the end of the day the MSI Z87-G41 PC Mate is going for ~ $60 and you don't need to worry about Intel banning overlock on non-Z
